Honored and excited to be invited to speak on a panel at the Future Food-Tech conference in Chicago next week about the future of meat/protein, specifically as it pertains to blended/hybrid meat. Our budding category is getting a lot of attention as the demand for processed plant slows, and cultivated meat continues to face a long list of challenges before it reaches market/consumer viability. Ironically, cultivated meat is now joining the blended party because of cost constraints. So we're now all in this together! The Big Idea I will be hammering home is that we don't have a climate problem, we have an accounting problem. And the solution is to incentivize what we prioritize. My hope is that we can harness the collective power of all the visionaries in this space, who understand just how much impact our food has on the environment where we all live (fresh water especially), and work together to create the right incentives for food innovation (just like we did for solar, wind, and electric vehicles), and start putting money where our mouth is, literally.

Post Holdings, a leading player in the CPG sector with renowned brands like Honey Bunches of Oats, Pebbles, Bob Evans, and more, experienced a significant 23% increase in sales during the second quarter ending March 31. However, challenges such as volume declines in foodservice and US Retail, coupled with impacts from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) reductions, adversely affected Post Consumer Brands. Despite these hurdles, recent acquisitions, including a portion of J.M. Smucker Co's pet food business, Perfection Pet Foods, and Deeside Cereals Ltd., contributed to the uptick in net earnings and net sales compared to the previous quarter, with acquisitions accounting for $468 million. This dynamic underscores the importance of M&A for large CPG companies in a challenging consumer environment. In today's consumer landscape, major CPG companies must drive growth and remain relevant by having relevant brands and offerings in trending categories, which often entails divesting non-core assets to enhance cash flow for strategic acquisitions to execute on a buy vs. build strategy. SAFE NOTES ARE NOW UNSAFE... OK so what is going to happen to the money that was poured into CPG Brands via these supposed SAFE Notes? Issue is that no priced round took place and now it is likely if it did happen it would be at a fraction of the valuation that was contemplated leading to massive dilution for the founder. Many have a cap...few have a floor. and unless they are converted it will be impossible to raise new money at any valuation. #cpg #safenotes #fundraising

As a CPG brand working with co-packers, have you ever considered the power of referrals? When searching for a new co-packer, it's important to keep in mind that this industry largely runs on relationships and referrals. When having conversations with potential co-packers, don't forget to ask: "If this doesn't end up being a fit for you, co-packer, do you have other co-packers in your network that might be able to help?" Most of us are willing to refer *good* people and brands to other manufacturers if asked to do so. And we will usually make warm introductions, which cuts through the layers for you. So why not make a respectful ask for referrals? You can't assume the co-packer will do it, but it doesn't hurt to ask. And don’t be offended if we refer you to a consultant to help you run a co-packer search. If we do that, it means we think it’s in your best interest for a variety of reasons. Unless you have many years’ experience of co-packer searches and commercializations, the cost to pay a consultant to help is usually MUCH lower than the mistakes you will make in trying to do it yourself. Rapid grocer Gopuff launches B2B offering for DTC players, as reported by George Nott for The Grocer. In a strategic move to diversify its revenue streams and drive profitable order volume, Gopuff has unveiled "Powered by Gopuff," a groundbreaking platform enabling brands to utilize the rapid grocer's dark store and courier network for deliveries ordered through their own websites. With "Powered by Gopuff," shoppers can seamlessly make purchases on a brand's direct-to-consumer website, with orders automatically directed to the nearest Gopuff micro-fulfilment center. Here, orders are swiftly picked, packed, and delivered to customers, promising delivery times as fast as 15 minutes. Over the past six months, the platform has undergone rigorous testing with 20 FMCG brands, including industry giants like Ben & Jerry’s, Unilever, Mondelez International, and Nestlé. This initiative marks a significant shift for Gopuff, extending its proprietary fulfillment and logistics capabilities beyond its own app for the first time. Daniel Folkman, Senior Vice President of Business at Gopuff, emphasized the company's commitment to meeting customer demands for fast, reliable delivery. "With the launch of Powered by Gopuff, we're also becoming the fabric of instant commerce, empowering brands to deliver seamless experiences to their customers," Folkman stated. As part of the launch, Gopuff introduces "Storefronts," a Shopify-based online store theme integrated with Gopuff APIs. This allows brands to swiftly launch DTC sites, streamlining the process from weeks or months to a matter of days. Jay Tandan, Global Head of Digital Marketing at Ben & Jerry's, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the simplicity and convenience of Gopuff's micro-fulfillment centers. "Storefronts Powered by Gopuff solves that struggle for us and for Ben & Jerry’s fans across the country," Tandan remarked. Currently available across the US, Gopuff is considering a UK launch for its Powered by Gopuff offering. Additionally, the company plans to roll out "Fulfillment Powered by Gopuff" in Q2, a standalone warehousing and logistics service enabling brands to integrate and promote instant delivery on their existing DTC websites. While Gopuff is not the first to offer such services, with Deliveroo and Jiffy exploring similar models, its move signifies a significant advancement in the quick-commerce sector.
