Attention Nonprofit Leaders & Community Members: A Dangerous Bill Threatens the Future of Suffolk County Nonprofits! The Nonprofit Resource Hub (NRH) stands in solidarity with Suffolk County nonprofits, firmly opposing the counterproductive bill sponsored by Legislators Rob Trotta and Trish Bergin. Nonprofits are the backbone of Long Island, filling vital gaps in public services that benefit every resident. Limiting their resources or hindering their leadership’s capacity to manage complex, multimillion-dollar organizations only weakens their ability to serve the public good. This bill, flawed in both intent and execution, fails to provide thoughtful or fair oversight and could have devastating consequences for the essential services nonprofits provide to the most vulnerable in our community. We urge Suffolk legislators to reject this measure at the next meeting and advocate for smarter, more effective solutions that strengthen, rather than weaken, the nonprofit sector. This is a very real issue, especially in New Hampshire's smaller communities, but it's not because "younger folks...are not willing to volunteer anymore." There are a lot of challenges at play here, but as it relates to young people, the biggest challenge is that their numbers have dwindled significantly in many of our state's communities. There just aren't enough young people to fill the volunteer roles on which our communities depend. And that's because young people can't afford to live there, which is due in large part to land use policies in many New Hampshire towns that make it very difficult, if not impossible, to build apartments and starter homes on small lots, i.e. housing that's more affordable to young people and young families.
