California faces a budget deficit of approximately $45 billion. Newsom proposed more than $170 million in reductions to two CalWORKs programs: one that provides home visiting services to pregnant women, caretakers and parents and another that offers mental health and substance abuse services. Newsom proposed major cuts to the state’s homelessness programs, including a one-time $260 million cut from the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) program — supplemental funds that were set to be released to cities and counties this year and next year. Hundreds of millions in reductions to homelessness programs. A pause in billions for subsidized child care. A $510 million reduction to the Middle Class Scholarship program. And $300 million in annual reductions to public health funding. Those are just a handful of the proposed budget cuts across 260 state programs in California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s latest $288 billion budget proposal Hundreds of thousands of people who have experienced domestic and sexual violence, child abuse, human trafficking and other crimes in California are at risk of losing out on vital services due to a projected 44.7% loss in federal Victims of Crimes Act (VOCA) funding to the state. Adding onto a cut of roughly $500 million from a K-12 program to help districts pay for building projects as well as the delay of $550 million from a similar program for preschool, transitional kindergarten and full-day kindergarten projects, Newsom proposed revising downward the method for calculating educational funding under Proposition 98, which “sets aside a minimum amount of funding for schools and community colleges,” according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office. The OC Health Care Agency will also be affected by fewer state dollars — Newsom proposed eliminating $52.5 million this year and slashing $300 million annually in state and local public health funding. https://lnkd.in/dvbC74k2

Pepperdine University MOST FUNDABLE COMPANIES competition. Winners earn a spot on the annual Most Fundable Companies List, which garners national publicity and recognition. Winners are also published in Entrepreneur Magazine. It's all completely free and affiliation with Pepperdine is not required. The only requirements are that their company is based in the United States, is for-profit, and has LESS than $10 million in annual revenue. Many founders who go through the entire process have called it a transformational experience that has prepared them to attract and secure outside equity investment. The first round of the competition is a short questionnaire about their company's basic information that they will know off the top of their head. It can be easily completed on a mobile device in around 8 minutes. It is seriously very short. Startups that advance to the second round (quarter-finals) will complete a more in-depth survey that will help us understand their venture more fully. In return, they will receive a detailed report on how to make your startup more attractive to investors. The deadline for completing the first round is coming right up on May 21, 2024. I’m generally pretty cynical about politics and lobbying organizations but after years of bemoaning California laws and regulations, I couldn’t be more proud to be a board member of the California Retailers Association (CRA) right now. Our Executive Director, Rachel Michelin and the team have achieved something monumental with landmark legislation for PAGA Reform (signed into law July 1st https://lnkd.in/gkb7ew4U) and Prop 47 Crime Bill reforms about to be signed into law plus a comprehensive ballot initiative to further fix legislation. These issues are monstrously important given how expensive meritless PAGA lawsuits can be and how severe crime has become. 🔹 PAGA Reform: • Streamlined Legal Processes: Reduces frivolous lawsuits and litigation costs, ensuring that legitimate claims are addressed more efficiently. • Enhanced Employee Protections: Strengthens protections for employees by promoting fair and just workplace practices. • Economic Stability: Supports business sustainability and growth by reducing the burden of excessive legal fees. 🔹 Prop 47 Crime Bill Reforms: • Increased Accountability: Strengthens penalties for repeat offenders, helping to create a safer environment for both retailers and consumers. • Community Safety: Prioritizes public safety by addressing gaps in the original legislation that allowed for increased retail theft and other crimes. • Resource Allocation: Redirects resources to support rehabilitation and prevention programs, aiming for a long-term reduction in crime rates. While my role in these achievements was very minimal (I mostly provided data and did a lot of whining about the challenges small retailers like Daniel’s Jewelers face), the relentless dedication and strategic vision provided by Rachel’s leadership not only champions the interests of California’s retailers but also fosters a safer and more prosperous community for all. Her tireless efforts have been instrumental in driving these reforms, and I am honored to support such impactful work.
