We were so lucky to have Kaylie as our Account Services Intern at ANDERSON Advertising from June 2018-December 2018 and I wish it could have been longer. She successfully ran social media programs for a number of ANDERSON clients (and our own ANDERSON social as well), managed the ANDERSON blog and assisted with ongoing paid media and social media reporting (weekly, quarterly, monthly). She was also willing to lend a hand across other departments and did so on a regular basis. It was so great to see such a young woman embrace challenges and consistently step out of her comfort zone to try something different or tackle a new problem. It is rare. I work at a purpose-driven agency, and I think about this a lot. The author says "Advertising has become too earnest. Brands need to be braver with their creative. They need more populism and less purpose." But here's the thing: purpose and entertainment aren't mutually exclusive. Just because you stand for something doesn't mean you need to be serious and boring. Liquid Death has done a great job of taking a stand against plastic while being consistently hilarious. At OBERLAND, we've tackled "serious" topics like boardroom diversity for E.L.F. BEAUTY and done it using dick jokes. Personally, I'm on a mission to "make climate change fun." If activism can be entertaining, more people will join in. Purpose isn't the problem. But taking yourself (or your brand) too seriously might be.
