This is an old news item, but still very relevant I think. I have noticed a lot of 'isolated incidents' happening around the country as a result of sub-optimal EPR implementations. This time last year, there was a news article that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs had got so fed up with its under-performing #EPR, that it had renegotiated its contract with the vendor to include penalties related to performance management, specifically reliability, responsiveness and interoperability. (I wonder if the new contract is publicly available Neil Evans, MD ?) While this is a $10Bn contract, UK trusts looking to contract with an EPR vendor should still try to include penalties for under performance, and most importantly, safety issues. For those in healthcare concerned about the pace of progress in policy and information technology, this group photo from my archive sheds light on the journey. Pre: ONC, ARRA marked a time before the outlawing of preexisting conditions for insurance exclusions. This change eliminated a system that financially burdened individuals, leading to avoidable deaths and age discrimination. Looking back, this was a time when interoperability was not yet a requirement. Today, we must focus on making tangible advancements in this area. Let's move away from silo mentalities and strategies that inadvertently impact patient outcomes. UnitedHealth expects up to $1.6B hit from Change cyberattack this year Investors got a clearer picture of the cyberattack’s financial fallout on the healthcare juggernaut. Some said it wasn’t as bad as they’d feared. In the first quarter alone, the cyberattack cost UnitedHealth $872 million, according to financial results posted Tuesday. Optum, Change’s parent division, reported a hit from the attack of $642 million in the quarter through a combination of reduced revenue and the costs of responding. UnitedHealthcare, UnitedHealth’s insurance division, reported an additional $230 million in costs. UnitedHealthcare’s MLR was also inflated by the company pouring more money into reserves for insurance claims, to provide a buffer for future payouts in light of unclear claims visibility stemming from the cyberattack. In strategic IT planning for healthcare, we need to move beyond buzzwords like "Digital Transformation" or "EMR journey" that sounds good in a brochure but doesn’t really tell us much. Effective strategic planning demands specificity--it should spell out exactly what needs to be done so that a team could jump on it the very next day. Instead of fuzzy goals like "creating a fully-integrated environment," we should be talking about concrete steps like "digitizing paper-based patient registration processes," "integrating HIS orders with LIS", or "rolling out e-prescription systems that connect doctors’ notes straight to pharmacy inventory and dispensing." These specific actions provide a clear path forward, ensuring every initiative makes a real difference in boosting service delivery and operational efficiency. Our focus should be on making strategic plans that are both clear and practical. That’s how we make genuine progress in modernizing healthcare facilities.
