The CFPB’s findings on negative equity appear to be analysis in a vacuum. Concluding that those with equity in a trade are less likely to default than those who have none is not new to risk managers, nor does it represent anything sinister. Those who pay few of their bills are also worse than those who pay all of them. There are many risk factors (good and bad) that compensate for each other in a well-built scoring model, allowing the lender to adjust price and structure to fit that risk. Is it better to not lend to a large group of people because, for example, 20 percent may default? Update: NAIC Proposals to Challenge Credit Ratings for Structured Securities Following the passing of the resolutions by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)’s VOS Taskforce and the (E) Committee regarding the use of credit ratings, feedback from some market participants suggests these resolutions are likely to be workable for the industry.
