Investing in companies that fill needs for health systems is a growth opportunity for both delivery organizations and start ups. Some systems are jumping in on their own, while others are partnering with like minded systems or with established VC firms. While this is a relatively new trend for systems, health plans have been making similar bets for many years. The benefits of becoming a health system portfolio company can be significant. Data, access to beta populations and real world coaching can be extremely beneficial. Start ups get mentoring and systems have to ability to leverage outside resources to solve relevant business problems. I predict a booming business!

Totally agree, but we actually see the opposite in healthcare. As care delivery businesses are mostly run by people who have no prior knowledge of how to deliver care. The ACA actually prohibits doctors from even owning hospitals. Which completely enables MBAs and other non-clinical administrators to influence how patients receive care. Perhaps surprisingly, success in healthcare innovation takes more than a great idea – it takes strategic execution. I have seen firsthand that founders who carefully align their teams and refine and sharpen their strategies are the ones who have the best chance of breaking through. We are excited to help companies navigate this complex but rewarding journey.

Hmm. If these large companies are struggling to make a profit in healthcare--- with their economies of scale, strong market position and geographic locations, marketing savvy, and ability to treat patients like customers and funnel them to use a variety of their other profitable services (esp pharmaceutical, cold remedies)...... How can those in primary care survive? I know first hand-- my wife is in a small primary care private practice. They survive week to week paying their bills-- but provide great personalized care to their patients--- her wait time for new patients is 18 months which says a lot about her skill as a primary care (and she really 🏩 cares) physician and the state of primary care access (it is shrinking at an alarming rate). So it seems convenience for customers is not the answer. Well not enough smart people have tried to solve the healthcare finance dilemma--- I love this quote from the article-- “There’s no end of [executives] who have come in and said, ‘I think the problem in healthcare is that my genius and my business acumen hasn’t been applied to it yet,’” --- genius has yet to solve the problem--- Just ask Warren Buffet and Atul Gawande. So commoditizing healthcare does not seem to be working. The fee for service model continues us down this path of doing more, treating pathology, and not creating wellness to get paid. We need to create a reimbursement model that focuses and rewards high quality, team-based, patient outcome and experience driven healthcare. Maybe CVS and Amazon will solve the puzzle. Hmm, but is it a puzzle for patients, clinicians, or profits? #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter https://lnkd.in/g73tvrEZ
