Winning articles in 2023 California Journalism Awards I was delighted to see that two of my 2023 articles for the East Bay Express were winners in the recent 2023 California Journalism Awards. For background, these awards are divided by "divisions," so that alt-weeklies, for example, are not competing against big papers, such as the Los Angeles Times or San Jose Mercury News. Still, it's heartening to see that my work on these two pieces was recognized. My story on a groundbreaking study on coal and petcoke dust, conducted by two UC Davis scientists and a local public health consultant, "Dust-Proof," won second place in Division 5, Reporting/Environment. We have arrived at the five year anniversary mark for Cloudcast Media and the article from today's The Wall Street Journal has reinforced our original hypothesis and supported by the military adage of never take a fortified hill. Instead, build your own hill and fortify it. Many companies decided to take on the "blockbusters" and compete with Spotify and others. Not Cloudcast. We chose a different kind of "block" buster as in your neighborhood block. Our goal was to become the national leader in LOCAL podcasting. With local print, TV, and radio undergoing seismic cataclysmic changes and death spirals due to technology and consumer habits, we thought local podcasting could become the new horse in the local media race. 65+ shows later, with expansion now to Altanta and Philly, thousands of episodes, educational initiatives like SchoolCAST, VOICE, and PODucation, many corporate sponsors, many blue chip clients, University collaborators, middle schools, high schools, YMCAs, live events, and even the first ever podcast-to-play....maybe we're onto something. The laws of gravity dicate that local always wins. A proud "4QPreneur." (Yes, that's becoming a show...never miss an opportunity to pitch new shows, particularly since we're talking to corporate sponsors). PS. Stay tuned for more on our 5 Year Anniversary. PPS. Message to all entrepreneurs and fellow 4QPreneurs...uncertainty is almost always opportunity. Nine months into launch, COVID hit and we had to do a reboot of Drew Schlosberg's show, now known as Spotlight On The Community, as both the UT and sponsor pulled out.
