In June, Carl Fangue had the chance to attend Jason Christopher's workshop on Emerging Regulations and Their Impact on Critical Infrastructure at the SANS Summit in Orlando. Carl shared, “The discussion was fantastic and the group was really engaged. One of the standout ideas was what Jason calls ‘Cyber Safety’ – blending compliance, safety, and cybersecurity efforts into one.” It’s a smart and intuitive approach that more organizations should adopt. The critical infrastructure sectors are moving in the right direction, but there's still a lot of ground to cover. Usually, compliance, safety, and cybersecurity are handled separately, each with its own team, processes, and tech. But there is an area of overlap, and combining these efforts can really boost an organization’s resilience. Thinking about safety in the traditional HSE sense while also considering how a strong cybersecurity posture can contribute is imperative. And bringing compliance into the conversation, which continues to grow in scale, just strengthens this comprehensive strategy. Jason pointed out three big benefits of this model: • Getting better cybersecurity budgets • Proving the effectiveness of controls • Reducing the impact of cyber events Plus, as Jason also notes, this approach creates a system of checks and balances and encourages cross-pollination as different parts of the organization work together with a common goal.
