Things are Just Taking Off in Provo, UT! Exciting changes are underway in Provo, Utah, as our city prepares to become an international transportation hub! With the state's booming economy, the expansion of the Provo Municipal Airport is a testament to Utah's growth. Provo Airport’s new terminal opened in July 2022, and Allegiant and Breeze Airways quickly established bases here. These budget-friendly carriers quickly attracted a wave of travelers, and before we knew it, the need for expansion was clear. “We have nine commercial aircraft parked here, which immediately put us over our capacity,” says Provo Airport Director Brian Torgersen. But no worries—Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi was ahead of the game, planning for expansion from the get-go. The demand for more gate space has led to ongoing construction that will add up to 12 gates, with three new gates on the south end ready to handle international flights. The Provo Airport launched the Business Air Task Force in September 2023, involving over 120 companies to attract major carrier services and develop the airport into a global connectivity hub. Adding to the excitement, American Airlines is launching a new domestic route to Provo! Starting October 7th, SkyWest Airlines will operate three daily flights to Provo, connecting us to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This year-round service will provide residents convenient connections across the U.S. and the world. We recently flew from the new Provo Airport and could not have asked for a better experience. And right on cue with these developments, the Hampton Inn Provo, one of the closest hotels to the airport, is undergoing a full renovation. By Spring 2025, our exterior, interior, and common areas will be like new, just in time for the airport's expansion. While I wont likely agree with the economics of tearing down 17 units for a new development, these new units would all be rent controlled and restricted affordable and getting 9x the existing unit count. Seems like a win win for the city (yes, at the expense of some) and smarter for the greater, long term vision of our city. Can we get some rational thinking going on in LA??? If the city is so concerned with RSO demolition/relocation use some of that HHH, ULA, Prop 1, etc, etc, etc and etc monies that you have completely wasted and buy all rent controlled buildings in LA. Though, last I checked, HACLA will only consider buying buildings over 100 units. We are the richest country in the world and we cant figure this out? Shame on our city leaders.

Malls are seeking more unique restaurant concepts to draw foot traffic than QSRs and the once ubiquitous lifestyle restaurant names like TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesday, Applebee's Neighborhood Grill + Bar and Chili's. Quick-service restaurants in food courts are fleeing the mall to freestanding drive-thru locations, a post pandemic trend that’s not going away. Drive-thru sales hit $133 billion in 2022, an increase of 30% from 2019 pre-pandemic levels, according to Technomic, Inc., a restaurant industry consulting firm. Another research firm, Revenue Management Systems (RMS) reported that drive-through sales account for two-thirds of QSR revenue. Net drive-through sales were up 25% in the first half of 2023, compared to the same period in 2019. So what’s replacing QSRs and the typical lifestyle restaurant in malls? There’s a new guard in malls,” according to Chris Simms, CEO and founder of Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, which operates around 50 ski lodge-themed restaurants around the country. People want to experience something different than the typical burgers, chicken and pizza places, according to David Kim, co-CEO of Gen Korean BBQ House. Gen has 40 restaurants with plans to grow to 250. Customers order raw meat to their tables and cook it themselves. Food and entertainment extend the duration of the mall visit but landlords have to be creative in finding unique and different tenants to enhance the experience.
