The continued unchecked growth of credit unions outside their core mission, particularly through acquisitions of tax-paying banks, is deeply concerning. This creates an uneven playing field, traditional banks struggle to compete against entities benefiting from tax advantages. They have been left unchecked on expanding into new markets and acquiring community banks across the country. Even more troubling is the lack of balanced regulatory oversight for credit unions, which could lead to significant risks. Without proper monitoring, we may see the first 'too big to fail' credit union, potentially requiring a taxpayer bailout within this decade. It’s time to demand fair regulation and oversight across the financial sector to ensure stability.

We read with trepidation an article that echoes the coming landslide of home price stability of 2007, with its warning of what happens when mortgages exceed the value of the home they're covering. And in some areas of North Carolina, we rank fairly high in spite of us welcoming hoards of newcomers. What does this mean in just a few words? It explains the debilitating effects that come about when we are funneled into solutions for buying a home that are not sensible or fully narrated in the truth of economics. And our belief is that this kind of pressure builds up when residents are desperate for home ownership and close their eyes to the reality of affordability. It is all a part of a continuum that we perpetually ignore; separating the cadence of cooperation between planners, banks, and builders, that should be the hallmark of municipal policy when it comes to density and housing availability. The water level of housing prices stayed level and nearly rose in symphony everywhere around the state, even in areas that are not as popular, and therefore, when on the fringe, peril will eat away at those areas first. What can we do? Continue to encourage and demand that builders and policy-makers look at how to house people, sensibly, and not just focus on the polarity of cultural preservation versus profit preservation. Honestly, we're all smart people.
