Inside Climate News reporter Phil McKenna recently wrote a detailed report on Ernest Moniz' new report, "The Future of Natural Gas" (Moniz et al, 2024, Energy Futures Initiative, 265 pp, https://lnkd.in/ewfR3sag). McKenna interviewed me for 30 minutes for the article but by the end felt that I had "no evidence" for anything I said. This isn't about Big Oil corruption of media. This isn't about good or bad reporting. And it's not about someone who doesn't care. Every reporter I've read in ICN cares. They are professionals who could work at any newspaper. This is about a fundamental flaw in how climate journalists understand their work. And I think this 28 second clip can explain the point. In 2022, the BBC is interviewing former U.S. Energy Secretary Moniz about his handling of methane emissions when he served as Energy Secretary in Barack Obama's second administration (2012-2016). The BBC asks Moniz about methane and Moniz says blah blah blah. Please have a listen. It's only 28 seconds. In 2022, Ernest Moniz had only one possible answer to this question: Methane emissions are a major crisis and this is what we are doing about it. If Moniz doesn't say that, then, for a climate reporter, that's the story. The crisis of methane emissions is one of the 'beats' that a climate journalist must be patrolling. If a former U.S. Energy Secretary directs your attention away from where it needs to be, that is the story. That is the news. As it happens, Ernest Moniz realized his mistake. So, for the version of the same interview that aired on PBS in the U.S., six minutes of evidence against Moniz was deleted, so that the version that aired in the U.S. presented the exact opposite argument than the BBC version. And yet, incredibly, for McKenna, there was still nothing going on. There was no news, no evidence. Nothing to report. And McKenna isn't alone. New federal data show that #naturalgas has done more than any other fuel to reduce CO2 emissions in the U.S. power sector. Since 2005, 61% of the decline in CO2 emissions from the U.S. power sector was driven by coal-to-gas switching. Even more impressive is that the reductions from natural gas were higher *every year* than the savings from zero-carbon generation. In 2023 alone, the increased use of natural gas prevented 653 million metric tons of CO2 from being emitted. Coal generation fell that year by 155 terawatt-hours (TWh), and most of that was replaced by natural gas, which increased by 113 TWh. These data add to a growing recognition about the role of natural gas in our future energy system, including its capacity to drive GHG reductions while maintaining affordability and reliability. It's also a useful data point in the broader conversation about policies like the #LNG export pause, as countries around the world look to replicate the U.S. success story with expanding the economy and reducing emissions simultaneously. **This chart used to be published on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's annually updated page that shows CO2 emissions reductions from the energy sector. But a few years ago this chart suddenly disappeared from that page. You can now find it buried in the "Methodology and Supplemental Content" document.
