Israel was brutally attacked on October 7th, 2023, and on April 14th , 2024. We are facing more than 6 months of significant war. Even though, I have an optimistic view for the future of the Middle East and Israel. Nvidia is buying the Israeli startups Run:ai for $700 million and another Israeli AI startup Deci (no details yet). Check Point registers higher than expected Q1 2024 profit helped by growth of AI-powered security platform. Magnus Metal raises $74 million to digitize metal casting. The company is innovating the centuries-old metal casting industry by providing an Industry 4.0 based fully automatic manufacturing solution that aims to make the process faster, safer, and environmentally friendly. I believe that rather sooner than later a ceasefire will come. The Middle East will face stability and rehabilitation in Gaza, new order on the Israeli border with Lebanon and the most important act for the area and the world, a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel. There is a lot to wait for.

New post: The big stack game of LLM poker https://lnkd.in/d5mfqgwk I’m sure you read David Cahn’s excellent and provocative piece "AI's $600B Question", in which he argues that, given NVDIA’s projected Q4 2024 revenue run rate of $150B, the amount of AI revenue required to payback the enormous investment being made into NVDIA each year plus the electricity to power GPUs to train and run large language models is now $600B, and we are at least $500B in the hole on that payback. The numbers are certainly staggering… and are just going to get bigger. Unless the scaling hypothesis falters, this is a contest now of “not blinking first”. If you’re a big stack player like META, MSFT, GOOG, or any of the foundation model pure plays, you have no choice but to go all in — the prize and power of “winning” is too great. If you blink, you are left empty handed, watching someone else count your chips. It’s likely hundreds of billions will be destroyed, and trillions earned. There are big tax changes on the table right now, and everyone in Israel should be paying attention. As I've written here before, this war has been, and will continue to be extremely expensive, and the Israeli government needs to make up for the added costs with more taxes. I'll leave the nuances of the potential changes to how your income, pension, "keren hishtalmut" and other finances are affected to the experts like ⚡ Nadav Ellinson, and I'll stick with the possible changes for the real estate market. The main ones are that the tax brackets for exceptions from purchasing tax would be frozen for the next 3 years. Every year they raise the maximum price at which buyers don't owe any tax on buying a home, based on the housing index. If that's frozen, it will mostly affect young couples and olim buying their first home in Israel. For example, if the exemption right now is for 2M shekel, and you're buying at 2M, you owe no taxes. If that same apartment costs 2.1M by the time you buy it, but the exception hasn't gone up, you're paying 3.5% (or 0.5% for Olim) on that 100K. A more marginal proposal to the average Israeli is eliminating the VAT exemption for tourists (which has been proposed and not passed in the past). The main effect for RE is that hotel stays become 17% more expensive, which would hurt those who own hotels and potentially benefit subletters and other short-term rentals. Of course, the proposed changes to income tax and taxes on savings would also reduce the available funds that home-buyers have available. Given the immense and immediate pushback these proposals have received, despite most people's focus on the war, it's likely that not all, or maybe none, of these changes will get passed. However, these are all very important updates to monitor. I'll try to share updates here for those who are following.
