Chris, Thank you for sharing this—truer words were never spoken. Many people see the numbers as absolute because they don't experience the daily frustrations that come from poor service. They don't have people in their community approach them in grocery stores or at our kid's soccer games, where every conversation begins with, "My internet service is so bad and expensive—can’t you help us?" The panelists rely on those statistics like a crutch, missing the real issues on the ground. During the BEAD Challenge window here in Massachusetts, we launched our own portal and promoted it extensively to capture raw data. What we found only confirmed our suspicions—there's a significant gap between the numbers and reality. While the panelists may actually believe the "self-reported ISP data" that says everyone is well served. The reality is far, far different, after several thousand-speed tests our data showed: -84% said they were unhappy with their service -44% said it was due to poor quality of service -41% said their service was too expensive -52% of speed tests taken between 6/20 - 7/20 failed to meet the 100/20 threshold -77% said they would switch if they had a choice The saddest part of this process is we all know that the bulk of the funds will go to the huge, corporate ISP's rather than to open access networks, muni networks or locally controlled networks that can make real fundamental change.
