🚨 Novo Nordisk Under Pressure to Cut Prices on Ozempic & Wegovy 🚨 At a Senate hearing, Sen. Bernie Sanders urged Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen to reduce the list prices of its popular weight loss and diabetes drugs, Wegovy and Ozempic. 🩺 Sanders revealed that major PBMs — UnitedHealth, Cigna, and CVS Health — won’t penalize Novo if prices drop, as long as net prices remain competitive. However, Jørgensen expressed hesitation, citing concerns over how these agreements would play out. Meanwhile, lawmakers like Rep. Lloyd Doggett and Sen. Last week’s half year results announcement at Boehringer Ingelheim shed light on our strong pipeline plans and our unwavering focus on addressing unmet patient need. While we have discussed our pipeline before, in the past few months especially we have had well-rounded progress on several of our focus therapy areas, showcasing once again our commitment to innovation addressing patient need.   1. Cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (CRM) health – Our recent groundbreaking phase II trial success in adults with MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) and liver fibrosis gives new hope to people living with connected CRM diseases. Our multi-year sponsorship of the American Heart Association's Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health Initiative will allow us to better understand the burden of people affected by diseases in these interconnected conditions and enable better care. 2. Oncology: Phase Ia/Ib trial of a HER2-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor in patients with HER2 aberration-positive solid tumors demonstrated promising efficacy. We are focusing our efforts in oncology with targeted investments aimed at making meaningful progress in promising trials with the ultimate goal of curing a range of cancers. 3. Mental health: “Rethinking mental health care: harnessing new approaches”, a study commissioned by Boehringer Ingelheim, uncovers the significant barriers and potential solutions to meet the growing, yet alarmingly unmet, demand for mental health services worldwide. 4. We signed nine R&D partnership agreements, significantly bolstering our human pharma portfolio across all therapeutic areas and tech platforms.   In the first half of the year alone, we initiated 28 clinical studies. We advanced our pipeline with five new phase I, II, or III initiations in cardiometabolic diseases, mental health and oncology, and achieved two additional fast track designations for programs in inflammation. All these achievements reflect our commitment to innovative patient care. By stepping up our investments in research and development, we are accelerating the delivery of breakthrough therapies that address healthcare's greatest challenges.   A big thank you to colleagues in Boehringer Ingelheim and our partners, who remain committed to a shared passion – value to patients!   The coming months and years present an excellent opportunity for us to transform lives for generations. 𝐓𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐊𝐎𝐋 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 We are well into fall, and back into congress season. How can we maximize KOL interactions and partnerships during major congresses and scientific meetings? 1.     𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬. If you need insights of a group of your top KOLs, planning an ad board at a congress is a great strategy. They’re all going to be there, so coordinating schedules and availability is much easier – as long as you plan early before their schedules are full. 2.     𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. If you have good news to share – such as data publication or launching your Phase 3 trial, think about a medical reception. You can host a large number of investigators/KOLs in a celebratory, more relaxed manner. 3.     𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬.   For more low-key regular engagements, plan dinners with your KOLs and investigators at the congress. Breakfasts or lunches work too. 4.     𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. Update your investigators on trial progress, key data, and next steps. This helps them become active and informed stakeholders in your research. 5.     𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡. Consider a medical booth at the congress, where you can engage with your investigators. This is particularly useful as you plan for a larger, phase 3 cohort of investigators. 6.     𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Host 1:1 meetings with KOLs in a private meeting room. Most congresses have such rooms available for rent by the day. Scheduling meetings with your investigators and KOLs is a great way to get dedicated time with the top experts in your field. 7.     𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. See where your KOLs/investigators will be presenting. Showing support for their work builds rapport. Initiate a follow-up discussion on their presentation and related topics. 8.     𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐩-𝐮𝐩 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Identify poster sessions relevant to your TA and where your KOLs may be presenting or attending. Initiate discussions around the data. This allows for conversations and demonstrates your interest in their research. 9.     𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. Many congresses will host a dinner or networking evening. These are great for informal, impromptu, but high-value engagements. 10. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐊𝐎𝐋-𝐊𝐎𝐋 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. Help connect KOLs by facilitating peer-to-peer interaction. Whether its during a dinner or between sessions, creating opportunities for younger KOLs to meet more established KOLs can build goodwill while tying them closer to your organization. We took a significant step forward today in our mission to address unmet patient need in oncology. The FDA has granted accelerated approval for Pfizer’s combination regimen for first-line treatment of BRAF V600E-mutant metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). This is the first—and also the only—targeted therapy regimen approved for this patient population. Some context: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer globally, with about 1.8 million new cases in 2022. For 20% of the people diagnosed, the disease metastasizes, and 8-10% of metastatic CRC cases involve a mutation in the BRAF gene—with the BRAF V600E mutation being the most common type of mutation. Sadly, the risk of mortality with this particular mutation is more than double that of patients with no mutation. There have been no approved therapies to specifically address the BRAF V600E mutation—until today. With the FDA’s approval, we can bring new hope to people battling this specific form of CRC. Thank you to the Pfizer Oncology study team for continuing to advance the next generation of cancer breakthroughs. This approval adds to our legacy of developing medicines for some of the hardest-to-treat cancers, and to innovating science so we can realize our vision of helping people with cancer live better and longer lives. https://lnkd.in/em5e5Hid

The shift toward genuinely personalised care in oncology is causing a hypersegmentation of cancer types. Physicians are not the only ones having to tailor their approach to treating their patients; companies are now realising that they must evolve their commercial strategies, transitioning from the traditional didactic approach to something more individualized. At the heart of this evolution is the balance between patients' and HCPs' needs. While patients focus on quality-of-life outcomes, HCPs are focused on survival and seamless treatment integration into their practise. Striking the right balance is essential for successful commercialisation, but it not easy, as I've learnt from those in the oncology trenches, such as Rebecca Goldstein, PhD, CMPP Goldstein. Early collaboration with all stakeholders and understanding the full spectrum of experiences, from patient journeys to provider challenges and access issues, are essential to long-term success. The results of centring patients and building strategic partnerships early in the journey are worth it, just like the article is worth the read.

I love this work led by US Pharmacopeia Council of Experts member Jane Weitzel. Supporting systems than ensure the quality of medicines is clearly in the interest of patient and public health on its face but, if you consider the application of this work across 22,000 drug manufacturing sites around the world, the impact on planet health is also clear. And, another bonus …. using fewer natural resources also reduces costs and saves money. Win for patients, win for the planet, and a win for industry! A trifecta of impact.
