𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 Traditionally, Instructional Designers (IDs) create detailed storyboards that outline the structure and content of eLearning modules. Developers then use authoring tools to transform these storyboards into published files. However, the need for IDs to directly input their content into authoring tools like Articulate is growing. Here’s why this shift is becoming increasingly important. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝗗𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀? • Efficiency and Speed   • Enhanced Accuracy   • Increased Flexibility   • Better Collaboration   • Skill Development  𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 Training: Take advantage of online courses and tutorials on tools like Articulate to build proficiency. Practice: Regularly experiment with different features and functionalities to become comfortable with the tool. Collaboration: Work closely with developers and other stakeholders to integrate feedback and refine your skills. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 As eLearning continues to evolve, the role of Instructional Designers is expanding beyond traditional storyboard creation. Directly inputting content into authoring tools like Articulate is becoming essential for efficiency, accuracy, and creative flexibility. By embracing this shift, IDs can enhance their contributions to eLearning projects and stay ahead in the competitive landscape of digital learning.

It could be that many IDs either don't know any better or their hands are tied. I have worked with many, many SMEs who believe ID only assemble what they are told..ie they dictate every aspect of the course. IDs are just "secretaries " for the SME. IDs are ordered to follow instructions if they want to stay employed . IDs may not know the particular content they are working with, but they are masters of presentation, they know how to keep learners engaged and they know how to assess learning has taken place. They know how to parse out material and allow different learning levels to excel. One of the biggest obstacles is getting SMEs to understand that we actually know more about presenting their material then they do. I call it "stay in your lane" As an SME you tell me the technical aspects of the material and I will tell you the best way to present it. You stay in your lane and I will stay in mine.

Whether you're clocking in for an organization or carving your path as a freelancer, having a clear vision for your career as an eLearning pro is crucial. It's all too easy to get comfortable and find yourself drifting along rather than driving towards a destination of your choosing. Next thing you know, 5 or 10 years have passed by and you haven't progressed a bit. This can lead to career stagnation — a real risk for professionals in a dynamic field like ours. So, how do you craft this vision? Start by setting long-term goals. Where do you see yourself in five years? Are you leading a team, running your own eLearning consultancy, or breaking new ground in instructional technology? Once you have the destination in mind, figure out the steps you need to take and milestones to hit to get there. Invest in continuous learning to ensure your skills stay sharp and relevant. Network actively to build relationships that enrich your professional journey and open up new paths. In my experience, a career without a vision is like a course without learning objectives. It lacks direction and purpose. Set your sights on what truly matters to you, and let that vision guide every step you take in this exciting and ever-evolving field.
