Here's how you can navigate the dos and don'ts of networking in Venture Capital.
The number one thing to know before you seek funding from any outside investor is what their investment thesis is. This tells you the types of companies and products which align with their goals and philosophies. Since a fund's investment thesis doesn't change, look to build relationships with VCs whose investment thesis supports and aligns with your company mission.

Large law firms have consistently relied upon their equity partners are the primary, and in some cases sole, decision-makers within the firm. Notwithstanding the aggregation of power at the top of the firm, few firms are directing attorneys in a top-down structure. Instead, each attorney is free to proceed to use the tools and processes he or she decides, devoid of any connection to the firm's strategies. This leads to disconnected processes which can never improve, poor adoption of purchased technology, and high rates of laterals leaving for greener pastures. With the emergence of technology are a means of differentiation within the increasingly competitive legal market, firms must engage more deeply with their junior partners and senior associates to assure future growth. While equity partners are concerned with maintaining and growing their existing businesses through networking outside the firm, their mid-level peers are still jockeying for position within the firm. In this way, mid-level attorneys are a key junction for driving change and improvement. Social network theory tells us that it is easiest to spread new ideas via those individuals with the most interconnected networks. Where a firm desires innovation, they must invest in their mid-level attorneys and utilize those assets to drive adoption, improvement, and change.
