Join us Wednesday, 9/11/24 from 6-7:30 pm ET for a free webinar + Q&A on key national financial aid (FAFSA) updates, tips, and policies, organized by myself and Erick Deshaun Dorris at Young Invincibles, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS), Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration , National College Attainment Network (NCAN), and the State of Illinois - Illinois Student Assistance Commission. The panel will feature a variety of education stakeholder perspectives, including, crucially, student voices, young adult voices, and those from marginalized communities. Register ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eCkCDhQj The federal government just rolled out the new #BetterFAFSA form and in we NYS just passed our Universal FAFSA policy. It behooves us all, as education professionals and policy leaders especially, to help ensure our systems provide financial aid access and support to every student who wants to earn any type of (postsecondary) degree after high school, and completing the FAFSA is the most crucial first step in the process. We'll briefly discuss current and longstanding barriers and inequities to FAFSA completion, the impact it has on college enrollment, persistence, graduation, and workforce/employment outcomes, and what we can do to help increase financial aid awareness, support, and completion from high school to college and graduate school. We'll also hear directly from the U.S. Department of Education about many of the new changes to the improved FAFSA form, funding formula, remaining challenges, and changes soon to come. Finally, we'll includes lots of free FAFSA/financial aid support services and resources, from StudentAid.gov, supports for mixed-status families and DACA students/DREAMers, first-generation college students, and much more. The RioPlex bandwagon enlists Congressman Gonzalez to assure us that Mexico will be given help for its security problems and the good old safe days south of the river will come back. Security aside, what all the positive spin of RioPlex leaves out, which is central to the entire concept, is the cheap labor and land that industrialists seek in Mexico. Positively no transparency on that in the RG Guardian. One other issue being swept under the rug is that "North Tamaulipas" means close to the river, which will put even greater pressures and hazards on the life of the river itself. The Rio Grande is witnessing serious water shortages rn and Mexico seems unable to comply with its water treaties. It's not just the factories, it's the huge migration from central Mexico to the border for factory jobs at near-slave wages that will grow the population (and slums of destitution), putting an even larger strain on the river's water.
