*Wonk alert* As a comms professional, I closely follow the work of Yale's Anthony Leiserowitz. I was super excited to read that Tony and colleagues recently published an article in Nature, 'The evolving climate change investing strategies of asset owners,' a deep dive into #assetowners engagement with climate change. This dovetails with CPI's recent analysis of #pensionfunds progress on aligning portfolios with climate change realities, 'State of European Pension Funds’ Net-Zero Transition.' After banks, pensions funds are the largest source of investable capital, and other asset owners like foundations and family offices are hugely influential in investment trends. We need more active engagement from asset owners to address the climate emergency. #climatefinance Both studies find ample opportunity for asset owners to engage with advisors, asset managers, portfolio investments, and each other to overcome barriers and accelerate efforts. 🌎 Our team at Yulu Impact Communications tuned into many sessions during #ClimateWeekNYC to learn from experts about the progress, opportunities, and challenges of reaching net zero. 👩‍⚕️ One stand-out takeaway was a new theme in this year’s programming - “health.” 🆘 Climate change is already impacting the health and livelihoods of communities worldwide, and it’s critical we take steps to protect those impacted today, as well as plan for the multitude of future climate scenarios depending on the success of our collective action. The other perspectives we valued hearing include the impact of climate change on: 1. Children's mental health 2. Healthcare workers and their roles 3. Traditionally underserved communities, particularly racialized folx and those impacted by redlining 4. The Global South 5. Our planet's biodiversity (*while voiceless, human-made observations acknowledge this consequence) 🙏 Thanks to Climate Group for bringing different lenses to your programming, and enabling access for those not in NYC - you've given our team much to reflect on!

New from Chirag Lala and me for the Center for Public Enterprise on the three-legged stool of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund! In addition to achieving its crucial climate justice objective (leg 1), the fund is poised to deliver decarbonization (leg 2) and to do so by effectively using public capital to steer private (leg 3). In the 50th episode of Ash Cloud we focus on the climate related violence. Our guest, Peter Schwartzstein, describes this as a messy marriage of climate stress and poor governance. ISIS profited from collapsing agricultural positions to bolster its ranks in Iraq and Syria. The recruitment rate of jihadis was three time higher from villages reliant solely on rain than from similar villages with access to irrigation water. The developed world is not immune, above and beyond the global impacts of migration it has been documented that violence against women in Greece appears to increase almost in lockstep with summer temperates. In the United States, 85% of the mass shootings that occurred in 2022 took place between June and September, with the physiological changes unleashed by higher temperatures appearing to be a determining factor. The migration stories that make the headlines are only the tip of the iceberg. These are based on the 10% of people that flee their homes due to conflict and migrate internationally. The other 90% impact the towns and cities within their countries. However, as it's generally the best educated and wealthiest people that can actually afford to leave this also undermines the governance and financial security of the impacted villages further undermining these societies. Despite years of activism—from protests to policy advocacy—climate progress remains constrained by deep partisan divides. Climate change cannot be a perpetual political tug-of-war. With unified government control rarely lasting long, relying solely on one party is unsustainable. In the quest to mitigate social, nature, and climate crises, many leaders go above and beyond, tirelessly advocating for change and making strides in sustainable practices. Today, I want to highlight a standout leader in this vital fight: ROSELYN FOSUAH ADJEI As the Director of the Climate Change Directorate at the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Roselyn embodies the spirit of dedication and perseverance. Her pivotal work in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation champions forest conservation as a cornerstone of broader environmental efforts, underscoring its vital role even in a complex market landscape. The rate of deforestation and degradation continues at an alarming pace, overshadowing the slower—and much needed—advancements in other areas of environmental conservation. Despite this challenge, leaders like Roselyn are bringing high-integrity forest conservation back to the forefront, emphasizing robust biodiversity and integrating core social benefits. How should cities be thinking about carbon removal? In a new report by XPRIZE, South Pole, and the Global Carbon Removal Partnership, with C40 Cities and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) as supporting partners, we explore this topic in depth. ➡ Download here: https://lnkd.in/gCrSyeUC As climate change intensifies, the case for CDR interventions in and by cities becomes increasingly apparent. Urban settlements are responsible for ~70% of global CO2 emissions, and cities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, facing threats such as extreme heat, flooding and sea-level rise that pose considerable risks to infrastructure, public health and socioeconomic stability. 274 cities have net zero goals and over 1000 cities are part of the Cities Race to Zero campaign, but very few have carbon removal plans or a vision around how to neutralize residual emissions. By strategically harnessing the co-benefits of CDR, cities can contribute to other urban priorities while progressing towards net-zero goals. There are a number of different ways cities can support and scale CDR efforts depending on their unique context, priorities, and capacity. We outline a range of these in the report as well as dozens of examples already underway by pioneering cities already leading the way. As Climate Week and the United Nations General Assembly unfold in New York, the conversation around aligning climate finance with local needs is gaining momentum. Blair Glencorse of Accountability Lab and Michael Jarvis of Trust, Accountability and Inclusion Collaborative, highlight how localizing funds and driving green accountability can transform the impact of climate projects. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/erDbefW6 From Kenya’s Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) initiative to indigenous-led efforts supported by the Pawanka Fund, it’s clear: when local communities are involved, climate action becomes more effective and sustainable. By investing in accountability measures, we not only ensure transparency but also drive innovation, equity, and resilience where it matters most.
