Since its founding, The Rockefeller Foundation has supported connecting leading thinkers committed to the well-being of humanity, to help spark #bigbets that have bettered the lives of billions of people and transformed the world’s public health, agriculture, and renewable energy systems.   Earlier this week, we brought ideas from The Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center to Bangkok, where the Foundation's Asia Regional Office is located. We hosted a Big Bets TED Watch Party, where Bellagio alumni and our partners gathered to watch thought-provoking videos about breakthrough ideas being led by former Bellagio residents. We reflected on those ideas and our individual big bets. It was an intimate evening, with a lot of special conversations and heartwarming connections.   Here is a short summary of the videos we watched:   ✅ To transition to sustainable energy sources like solar, wind and hydropower, the world needs massive amounts of essential minerals. Environmental peacemaker Saleem Ali shared the environmental and social conflicts arising from mineral mining and extraction — particularly in politically sensitive areas — and proposed the creation of a “mineral trust” managed by international trustees to ensure equitable distribution.   ✅ From window shades built of hundreds of metallic, moving butterflies to an elegant tubing system that filters smog out of urban canyons, façade disruptor Doris Sung presented beautiful designs that can turn building facades into infrastructure for public wellness — and offered three ways to incentivize cities and property owners to make the shift.   Have you been to the Bellagio Center? It’s critical to continue to shine a light on the financial gap for climate adaptation (in 2021-2022, $1.15 trillion went towards mitigation with only $63 billion going towards adaptation) but sometimes, that means the conversation stops before the good news – that here are scalable and effective climate adaptation solutions that can be funded now.  Thanks, Scott Onder and Confluence Philanthropy for sharing this great piece on how emerging technologies like mobile internet, renewable energy, and AI are poised to drive exponential growth in climate adaptation solutions over the next decade.
