Unrestrained presidential tariff authority is the biggest threat to American competitivness, national security, innovaiton and growth. From my tech policy perspective: I've mentioned this problem so many times to people in tech and Silicon Valley, who seem to consistently brush tariffs off assuming any new tariff would fail given Congress' opposition. This isn't true. Tariffs can be enacted unilaterally by the president, a truly awesome presidential power that if abused, could crumble our economy overnight. Lets be real: AI, silicon valley, and cutting edge science can all quickly turn into 'nice to haves' if Americans can't afford food, clothes, and basic necessities. Ten percent tariffs would drive massive cost increases, flash freezing capital and discretionary spending. Silicon Valley would crumble, as would the rest of the economy. We need to stop sleep walking towards this policy failure and give such tariff proposals, and the underlying authorities, the serious treatment they demand. In the early 2000s I helped organize and moderate town hall meetings, in person and online. Results and reactions were often mixed. Engaging residents in solving urban problems can lead to better solutions, bolster public spirit, and deepen democracy. It can also disappoint, when expectations are misaligned, and interactions are unproductive. This new city leader guide offers research-based guidance on designing civic engagement efforts in cities. Are you concerned about digital authoritarianism? Experts convened by National Endowment for Democracy's International Forum for Democratic Studies, the Global Digital Policy Incubator and the Hoover Institution, Stanford University explored how authoritarian regimes use tech for social control. One prominent example of the spread of digital authoritarianism is Venezuela's "homeland" system, built with tech from Chinese vendor ZTE. This system integrates personal data, allowing the ruling party to monitor citizens and control access to services. Despite increasing data collection, authoritarian regimes don't always effectively use the information. Practical obstacles like limited technical capacity, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and people's resistance can hinder these systems. Emerging technologies like VR and AR headsets present new avenues for surveillance. These devices collect body-based data, including eye movements, potentially revealing personal attitudes, medical information, and even truthfulness. What can be done? Democracies must advocate for a rights-respecting vision of tech development, engage in setting technical standards, and support initiatives that counter surveillance and promote digital rights. #DigitalAuthoritarianism #SurveillanceState https://lnkd.in/eiD47PCW

Amid the challenges posed by the Israel/Gaza demonstrations on American campuses, along with a rising tide of political attacks on the autonomy of American universities, shared governance is also eroding on many campuses. The internal conflict that is splitting university communities, and fueling outside criticism, is also lending momentum to university presidents, and governing boards, ignoring and downgrading the voice and role of faculty senates – to some degree joining forces with lawmakers in some states who are attacking tenure, forcing curricular changes, demanding the end to the nomenclature of DEI, and view faculty as the problem. The comprehensive program should mount trade, capital investments, respect for forex exigency mechanisms, supplanting value chain localization, IP share, defense tech corridors, functional WTO, reciprocal market access, constructive unbiased resolution of NTBs erected under subterfuge of climate externalities, and most important of all, accommodation of free choice on global issues involving economic security on line (read crude). Reducing narratives to binary contestations will render little to yield 🤞🤞."
