Using critical feminist discourse analysis to examine how United States sports media articulate an ‘investment’ or ‘business’ opportunity associated with the women’s sports industry, this dissertation demonstrates that sports media mobilize narratives stemming from highly visible forms of feminism, particularly neoliberal feminism, to articulate financial value and opportunity. They do so by emphasizing the increased viewership and consumption of women’s sports (narratives of progress), the lack of gender equality in sports (narratives of failure), and the differences between men’s and women’s sports (gender comparisons). Sports media encourage investment by legitimizing it as “not just the right thing to do” for women, but also a lucrative financial opportunity. As such, women’s sports are described as an “untapped resource” and affordable to “buy into.” By coupling social advancement and business, sports media instrumentalize the marginalization of women athletes/sports to articulate an opportunity for capitalist gain.
