Bread Riot began as a small group of like-minded individuals in 2008, interested in increasing the impact of local food on the Rowan Co. economy. In April 2010, it became a federally recognized non-profit, focused on the mission of local food advocacy through connecting producers and community, education and and related food production policy, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Bread Riot is a regionally-recognized innovator in local food systems and state-wide in policy and educational partnerships. In 2014, as demand for Bread Riot food programs, generous grants, and influence in the community increased, the organization underwent the significant transformation from an entirely volunteer-run organization to hiring its first executive director. In a first-of-its-kind partnership, Bread Riot now manages the for-profit Salisbury Farmer's Market, and continues to make landmark changes to the food landscape in the Greater Charlotte area as the only non-profit organization of its kind in the state of North Carolina.

I oversaw the growth and development of this organization, it's BOD and dedicated volunteer network for 3 rewarding years, writing grants, developing key community relationships and laying the foundation for sustainable growth by collaboratively bringing the organization over the threshold from volunteer-run to hiring an executive director.

In the spring of 2008, the mounting crisis of child hunger led a small, collaborative group to take action in creating a supplemental feeding program. Originally known as "Backpack Buddies", it began as a backpack containing food for two meals per day, including drinks and snacks on each weekend during the school year. Initially, twelve children were served.

In the fall of 2008, this effort was expanded to include Rowan Helping Ministries as the acting fiscal agent and the program was awarded its first grant from the Salisbury Community Foundation. In the fall of 2009, "Backpack Buddies" underwent transformative organizational growth. St. Luke's Episcopal Church became the permanent fiscal agent. An official Board of Directors and by-laws for operation were created and a registered domain name was established: Food for Thought. These steps were taken to ensure the perpetuity of the organization in the pursuit of its primary objective: to provide meals to hungry children on weekends and holidays when access to nutritious food is lacking or non-existent. Additionally that fall, FFT expanded to provide meals to children at two area schools, serving a total of 50 students.

By the end of 2010-2011 school year, FFT served 125 students at six schools. After operating nearly three years with an all-volunteer staff, demand for programs required personnel dedicated to day-to-day operations. With growing community support via local foundations and individual contributions, Food for Thought hired its first executive director.

I shepherded and developed this organization, in partnership with a small dedicated team, and continued to lead strategic planning sessions to re-evaluate, focus and shape the future visions and plans for the BOD for several years after.

Today, FFT is still thriving, back under the Rowan Helping Ministries umbrella of services since August of 2017, serving over 900 students at the end of the 2019 school year within the Rowan-Salisbury School System.
