The good news is that open communications, fair treatment, and equal opportunity are all it takes to keep your best people. We don't mind getting in the boxing ring and losing to a better competitor - it gives us the fire to train harder and come back stronger when the next promotion opportunity comes along. But your best people will leave you if they believe you didn't consider them viable candidates or give them the chance to compete. Promotions send very strong messages to your entire team.
