How can you compare the processing power of a quantum computer with that of a classical computer?

At some point in your life you go from being a person who is mentored to one who also is a mentor to others. I’ve had many corporate roles, so I’m usually not at a loss to have at least something to suggest to a younger colleague. Here are some of the ideas and themes which I often discuss.

Over the last several years, I’ve been deeply involved with IBM‘s Mobile efforts and now lead that technology area in IBM Research. In the last year we’ve held several hackathons and other events to get more and more people knowledgeable about how to create mobile apps. So with this experience and recent partnership engagements, let me offer five ways where I think people go wrong when creating an app.

This specification defines the Mathematical Markup Language, or MathML. MathML is a markup language for describing mathematical notation and capturing both its structure and content. The goal of MathML is to enable mathematics to be served, received, and processed on the World Wide Web, just as HTML has enabled this functionality for text.

Big Data is not just about the data. It is about the intended use and the location of that use. Privacy, security, and data ownership are all important considerations that must be factored in before we do the “science” with the data.

Now that you have the information, what are you going to do with it? Will you just try to understand what is happening, as in descriptive analytics? How about predictive analytics to figure out what will happen if trends continue or if you modify conditions? Can you optimize the situation to get the result you want?

Assume, to start, that data, metadata, and summarized data all have the same privacy restrictions. If I cannot move data out of an organization or a country, assume the same about the other two. From there, look to see if laws or contractual agreements soften this at all.

The more you know, the more you can fit together the pieces into a coherent whole. Modeling a city, for example, needs a lot of different kinds of data, and this information is often interdependent and redundant.

I hosted a strategy session for my group at IBM Research and I used the following as a scale of how cognitive certain types of computing are.

In May of 2013 I was asked to contribute an article to ProVISION, an IBM magazine published in Japan for current and potential customers and clients. That piece was translated into Japanese and published at the end of July. Below is the original article I wrote in English describing some of the work we do in my group by the scientists, software engineers, postdocs and other staff in IBM’s Research labs around the world.

Analysis bridges the gap between how employers make these decisions, and how employees respond to it. A field that has historically relied on psychology or “gut” instinct is becoming increasingly data-driven, turning hunches into substantiated assertions and helping make what was murky or unclear easier to see and process.

In a more informal way, let me here ask some questions you should answer about yourself and your knowledge to see if this is a career or job you might consider. I’ve included a few technical questions to encourage you to learn more about some of the disciplines involved.

What are the main considerations when designing a math system or library that can do symbolic computation on mobile devices?

How the constant presence of a smartphone along with some analytics could have improved one travel experience, albeit with caveats on privacy and centralized personal data storage.

Where do mobile apps come from? What is necessary to construct the part of the app that lives on the device, smartphone or tablet, and the part that lives on the server on the backend? What tools are available for the developer for the full application lifecycle? How about testing for all the mobile operating systems and devices?

The hybrid approach to developing mobile apps offers advantages for those wishing to produce pure native apps or those that have HTML5 content.

2012 is a critical year for Enterprise Mobile because I believe many organizations will be choosing the platform to support their Mobile implementations through the middle of the decade.

BYOD, or “bring your own device” complicates things because I probably do not want the organization for which I work to impose overbearing policies that affect my personal use of my phone.

Being in the IT business and in a company like IBM, I’m somewhat hamstrung in what I can say regarding the future because of confidentiality, but here’s my attempt at some prognostications that won’t be giving away anything secret.

If you don’t have a security policy in place for mobile devices in your company, you should start putting one together and implementing it now.

The problem is, when devices like thermostats, fire alarms, carbon monoxide level alarms, flood monitors, clothes dryers, and even refrigerators can convey information about their state, they do it in completely different languages and formats. As they become Things on the Internet, they need to communicate effectively with each other as well as systems that can take in all the varied information and make decisions.

The software industry is a great place to look for models of open innovation, but be warned that the basic definition of ‘open’ can vary, and you need to give so you can get.

With that preamble, IBM and Oracle have announced that they will work together on the newly reinvigorated OpenJDK project.

What questions come up most frequently when I engage with customers about open source? The answers should be important to you whether you produce or use traditional or open source software.

Firefox has been around for years, of course. Today we already have thousands of employees using it on Linux, Mac, and Windows laptops and desktops, but we’re going to be adding thousands more users to the rolls.

Integration means having your software systems and services talk to each other, wherever they may be located, in ways that implement the processes by which you run your company or organization. Integration failures can cause unhappy clients or customers, lost productivity and revenue, and sometimes legal problems.

So you’ve decided to use some open source code in your organization, company, or enterprise. What’s the same or different about maintaining open source versus traditional software?

Open source governance means how you control the flow of open source code into and out of your organization; how it is used in your products and services; how it is used to run your business; and the business and legal processes around all of this.

Here’s some advice to get you started in thinking about starting an open source business. Some of the questions I pose may sound negative, but they are intended to make you think and generate answers you can support.

In a culture of IT openness, leaders in the organization set the tone and example for others to follow. Yes, they help to develop the policy but it is their personal commitment to openness that makes that core to the ways their organizations operate. Policy may spell out the details, but examples lead others to the appropriate behavior and, yes, cultural acceptance.

I want to talk about how people who start out thinking that openness is a bad idea might come to deal with open standards and open source in a more positive way.

This book shows how you can publish LaTeX documents on the Web. LaTeX was born of the scientist's need to prepare well-formatted information, particularly with pictures and mathematics included; the Web was born of the scientist's need to communicate information electronically.

Recent advances in hardware performance and software technology have made possible a wholly different approach to computational mathematics.
