Some key learnings from this interesting article in the LA times about pesticides in what is advertised as a legal and safe cannabis industry in California. 1) Real journalists play a key role in protecting the public. With faith in institutions and companies both seemingly at a low, Alex Halperin and the LA Times are driven by finding out the truth. 2) It's important to be an informed consumer. Now - I'm staying away from distillate vapes as a category. I don't think I've ever bought one, but certainly been gifted many that I've consumed. 3) High integrity, skilled, business operators like Josh Swider deserve our patronage. Business owners only driven by profit will cut corners. I read the quotes of "our products passed testing by a certified lab" as an omission of guilt. The Department of Cannabis Control lacks the skill or focus to keep us safe. I know it's hard to value integrity in this struggling industry, so when we spot it, we must highlight it. I will only buy products certified by labs I trust going forward. My faith in most brands and the DCC is now eroded. Outstanding piece of journalism. How Sonoma County's Cannabis Equity Program missed the mark: How did Erich Pearson, CEO of SPARC and owner of 7 successful Bay Area dispensaries, along with 3 of his associates, manage to pull in 22% of the $635,000 awarded to grant recipients? Why is it that “a majority of the grant recipients are among the most successful and influential people in the county’s legal cannabis industry, some of (whom) are even promoters of local equity initiatives themselves”, according to Ezra W.’s investigative report for the Sebastopol Times? The Sonoma Valley Cannabis Group suggests that the manner in which these monies were awarded exemplifies the abject failure of a program that should be helping those most in need, but instead rewards some of the most eminently undeserving participants in the county’s cannabis community. Erich Pearson’s feigned support for social equity is the height of hypocrisy. Understanding that some of the recipients may be more deserving of the social equity money provided by the state, it is nevertheless concerning that others appear to have taken advantage of the opportunity and subverted the spirit of “social equity”. Where is the equity here? Mr. Wallach’s article only raises more questions and they deserve much better answers than, “The grant recipient met the eligibility criteria as specified”, and the county “will be reviewing and updating the eligibility criteria in the coming months”. Sooo, we’re doing a thing and bringing cannabis sales and consumption to the California State Fair. I believe the future of cannabis is in social consumption. Creating the first cannabis restaurant was (and is!) cool but….it wasn’t until I met Lauren and Dustin that I realized that it’s actually events that are the best opportunity for normalization. [Side note: I remember working on pitch decks for the business back in 2020-pandemic times and we had an events section. I’m 100% sure I said “hey guys, there will never be events again. I think it’s over? Sure we want to include this?” Happy to be wrong about that. 😅 ] Think of it this way– people that are going to lounges/cafes are intentionally seeking out a cannabis experience. Events tho? You’re tapping into an entirely new audience. These are folks that aren’t seeking out cannabis and just so happen to be at an event where cannabis co-exists. The mindset is different. The ability to change perception is different. And that is incredibly powerful when we are talking about destigmitizing the plant. Which is our mission at embarc– to destigmitize and normalize cannabis…at scale. What better place to do it than at one of the most normal events ever?
