I still remember my first job as a customer support rep, like it was yesterday. I was thrown into the deep end with no training, just a computer and a "figure it out" attitude, but that's where the magic happened! Here's what I learned: - Self-learning is key: I learned to rely on myself to find answers rather than waiting for others to spoon-feed me. - Resourcefulness is power: I discovered that I could overcome even the toughest challenges with a bit of creativity and persistence. - Growth happens outside comfort zones: By being pushed out of my comfort zone, I developed a sense of resilience and adaptability that's served me well. - Autonomy is liberating: I learned to take ownership of my work and learning rather than rely on others for direction. - Confidence comes from within: By figuring things out for myself, I built a sense of self-assurance that's helped me tackle even the most challenging tasks. These lessons have saved me time and time again. If you're just starting or feeling stuck, remember that your ability to learn and adapt is your greatest strength. My recent post on the invaluable (and often overlooked) skill of finding creative solutions to problems, regardless of industry prompted a lot of discussion — oddly all in private messages, you can post publicly… I trust you. The most common question (other than wanting to know more about my very, very odd career path) was for real-world examples of how thinking outside the box provided an exceptional result for both the business and the customer. Comments ranged from being concerned that such actions could backfire to those who wanted to align the same thinking in their departments. There are innumerable benefits to finding and sharing creative solutions, both internal and external. For example, we had a system that had been working flawlessly for years and suddenly was starting to fail. We saved internal resources (and cost) by supplementing the standard protocol of bringing the issue to the engineering team with an internet search that provided insights into a change in outside services that was the trigger. Finding and sharing that information enabled a solution to be pushed out before most customers were even aware of the issue. Internally, we saved hours of labor for the social media and support teams (who did not need to reply to customers without a fix) and for the engineers (who had all the information needed to design and implement a solution). External benefits create a connection with clients -- recently a customer was experiencing an issue that they mistakenly believed was due to a programming flaw… providing a link to a solution that was completely unrelated to our system along with a kind and empathetic explanation of the issue did far more than resolve the problem… it created brand loyalty that cannot be overlooked. As for the possibility of failure… I have found that providing creative solutions as an option is almost never a bad choice: worst case scenario is that the solution does not achieve the desired result and regardless of success the customer knows without a doubt that you are providing service above and beyond the norm. The only risk can be if due diligence is not taken… for example, a junior Architect under my review who took this concept too far and did not realize the inherent failure that their creative solution would have allowed light into a darkened theater, even when movies were running. Due diligence and looking deeper past the problem through what the potential fix creates is essential as it shows the customer you are vested in ensuring they have a long term relationship with your company not a quick fix. Careful use of creative solutions will benefit both your business and your customers alike.

Cal Newport 👉 "Overload makes it hard to do work." Do you agree with this? I recently listened to author Cal Newport speak about the idea and his new book Slow Productivity on Adam Grant podcast Work Life. Cal defines slow productivity as: 1. Do fewer things at the same time. 2. Work at a more natural pace. 3. Obsessing over the quality of what you do. "If those three things come together you get a vision of knowledge work that can be high impact and effective but is also very sustainable and meaningful." So how can you do fewer things and focus on higher quality? Cal recommends working on a few things at once lets say three and the rest are in a que waiting until you finish something and can add another task or project from your que to actively working on. By keeping some tasks in que, it removes the administrative overhead that would come with those tasks. So instead of attending meetings and writing and responding to emails for ten tasks you can focus that on three. 💡 What do you think? The Quiet Power of Accountability in Leadership Accountability isn’t just about admitting mistakes—it’s about creating trust and building stronger bonds with your team.
