Comcast NBCUniversal is extending a helping hand to Florida communities impacted by Hurricane Milton. The company's donation of $500,000, including cash and in-kind contributions, will support disaster relief efforts. $250,000 in cash will be divided between the Florida Disaster Fund and 11 community-based organizations like All Faiths Food Bank and Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice. Additionally, $250,000 in in-kind contributions will provide airtime for public service announcements to keep communities informed. This commitment, combined with previous aid for Hurricane Helene relief, brings Comcast's total contributions in the southeast U.S. to $1.5 million, with a significant focus on Florida – totaling $700,000 in cash and in-kind support. The FCC’s approval of Starlink’s direct-to-cell service with T-Mobile is significant. This partnership aims to provide cellular coverage in areas where traditional networks don’t reach, addressing long-standing issues with dead zones. It also strengthens emergency communication capabilities and improves network reliability, particularly in rural and remote locations. However, could this partnership potentially cannibalize some of Starlink’s revenue? Kathleen and I are both T-Mobile and Starlink customers. We are a “work from anywhere” couple and we use Starlink at our cabin in a remote part of Alaska because T-Mobile service doesn’t work there. With this new partnership, we might find we no longer need Starlink. The same could be true for boats, RVs, and other remote homes that currently rely on Starlink due to lack of coverage from traditional networks. New article on Comcast Business's plans. Comcast reported its Q1 results today. As in previous quarters, the EBITDA margin for its business division is very high - 57%; much higher than the other operators we track. It is planning to trade some of this margin for growth, which makes sense. Hats off to Masha Abarinova's BEAD op-ed (https://lnkd.in/gQs96rvv)! I agree 100% that a push-pull strategy is required to make Internet access AVAILABLE & AFFORDABLE. But let's not forget that if we want to close the digital divide and homework gap, the Internet should also be ACCESSIBLE and easily ATTAINABLE for ALL citizens. As the former head of Government Discount Programs (The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program [EBB], Affordable Connectivity Program [ACP], and Lifeline) on eight different brands at Verizon and TracFone, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles heads of households experienced trying to get just ONE subsidized Internet access connection for their family. As you read this, please COUNT the number of Internet access connections (wired/wireless/satellite/cellular/smartphones/hotspots) you and your family utilize. Now, compare your number with the ONE subsidized Internet access connection per family ACP helped to provide. As the number of Internet access connections per family has increased dramatically over the past decade, both the Digital Divide and the Homework Gap have widened in the United States. Using a combination of funding and policy approaches can make universal Internet access a reality in the United States.

Lycamobile is asking the FCC and the US Department of Justice to intervene in its fight against T-Mobile. "T-Mobile's actions towards Lycamobile raise concerns of anticompetitive conduct," the #MVNO wrote in a new filing to the FCC. "The totality of T-Mobile's conduct points to an attempt to lessen competition in the MVNO space – consistent with [T-Mobile's] incentive and ability to do so," #Lycamobile told the FCC. "Ultimate consequence is less competitive discipline on market participants, leading to higher prices and/or lower quality for consumers." As Light Reading previously reported, the fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile stretches back to 2022, when T-Mobile filed a lawsuit against Lycamobile. The fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile accelerated dramatically in April 2024. That's when Lycamobile took its complaints against T-Mobile public in an effort to block T-Mobile's proposed $1.3 billion acquisition of Mint Mobile. However, Lycamobile's complaints against T-Mobile were filed well after the #FCC's comment deadline for T-Mobile's Mint Mobile transaction. The agency approved T-Mobile's purchase of Mint Mobile in late April, and T-Mobile closed the deal on May 1. In its latest FCC filing, Lycamobile argues that T-Mobile is using its purchase of Mint Mobile to put further pressure on Lycamobile in the US. https://lnkd.in/gHdHPUeA
