Microsoft shows up often in discussions of corporate climate change action. And based on my understanding, the company is very diligently trying to reduce emissions in certain ways and through rigorous vetting of offsets. BUT, and this is the biggest "but" int the climate world today, their name is also frequently associated with obviously fraudulent or double-counted offsets (see Joe Romm, Ph.D. 's reserearch at University of Pennsylvania) and in the case below, with using AI to aid fossil fuel extraction. The shoe we haven't seen drop yet is to what extent (and my guess is it's huge) Microsoft is actually involved in ensuring that we develop all remaining reserves of oil, ensuring that we'll miss even weak climate targets. This is the central contradiction in the corporate sustainability movement, and Holly Alpine (née Beale) is hitting the exact right pressure point, along with As You Sow.

Sustainability - regulatory reporting obligation or strategic business opportunity? Both. Despite delays in new sustainability reporting requirements, U.S. companies are stepping up their efforts, according to a new study. More than 2/3 of large companies have dedicated budgets for reporting & nearly all plan to increase their spend. Interestingly, the EcoOnline Global survey found 37% are asking suppliers to self-report their data. This has implications for broadband service providers who will eventually be asked by customers to report on their environmental impact. That’s why we’re focused on reducing the environmental impact of our products and services now. But buried in the article is even more interesting data, including 74% of respondents that expect a positive impact on revenue growth, and 95% expecting a positive impact on brand value from sustainability initiatives. So many elements of business are data-driven; #DEI is no different. Our DEI strategies need to be evidence-based and informed by diversity data. Diversity data is of course key to understanding the diversity make-up of any organization and addressing any gaps but it is especially important to use that representation data to ensure all cohorts have equitable experiences and opportunities across the employee lifecycle, whether that’s hiring, internal mobility, time to promotion.... But we have to appreciate that inviting people to share their personal identity requires a huge amount of trust; we need to give confidence that the data will be private, confidential and secure. Working collaboratively with Privacy, Legal and Systems teams is vital to be able to provide that assurance. But build that trust we must if we are to make the progressive change in #equity and #inclusion that #diversity data enables; they are inextricably linked and the results are absolutely worth it!

During #climateweek, here’s what I realized as a Washington bureaucrat-turned-NYC-tech founder: The tech sector often acts like it owns innovation. 🔥 In reality, teams in government and multi-lateral organizations are pushing forward hard, deep, courageous paradigms that envision a better life for humanity at scale. Images like this make it seem that government folks just talk - but the organizer of this event is a dear friend who has dedicated his life to building a radical & ambitious movement that folks in this room, from different countries and orgs, have committed themselves to making reality despite tight restraints. 📺 But his story and their stories aren’t don’t make magazine covers. They’re not considered “cool” enough. Probably because change in this context is slow. 🐌 There’s only so fast you can move when you’re collaborating across… - completing interests, - political lines, - weak budgets, - leadership that ranges from despots to the democratically elected, and most importantly, - against the deep entrenchment of the status quo (and folks who benefit from it). Despite this, many keep at it. Many care despite the temptation of apathy. Despite burnout and invisibility. And the rest of us really need these smart, relentless people to keep up the work. 🙏🏽 Without them, we wouldn’t have collaboration vehicles - as imperfect as they are - like the United Nations, international science collaborations, the Schengen Visa, and a lot of other policies that keep us safe without us knowing.
