Earlier this year, several Rutgers School of Dental Medicine alumni ran into each other as volunteers at Smiles for Our Heroes event sponsored by Delta Dental of New Jersey and Connecticut. The volunteers didn't all know each other, but each were motivated to give back to veterans and underserved communities through compassionate dental care. Their shared passion for service brought them together to make a lasting impact--and we are so grateful for their service. For over six years, Jose Pierre, OD, has been Zufall Health's only optometrist, a role in which he is so grateful to provide vision care to everyone, regardless of income or insurance. Born and raised in Haiti, where medical care is a luxury for most, he understands the financial hardships that prevent access. He explains that vision care is essential to overall health: “The body is one interconnected system, not a collection of isolated parts. Eye exams can reveal important information about health, including signs of diabetes, hypertension, brain tumors, aneurysms, and sexually transmitted infections.” Looking ahead, he hopes to see optometry services expand to serve more patients at Zufall. “Many of my patients present with advanced conditions like diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma due to a lack of prior vision care,” he says. “It is important that we expand our resources to better meet their needs and those of additional patients.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTjEbz9h

September is National Recovery Month, a time to recognize the strength and resilience of individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. Last week, we marked the occasion by highlighting our expanded Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) program and its impact on our patients. “This expansion brings lifesaving treatment to patients within their own communities and reinforces the message that substance use disorders should be treated like any other chronic condition by your primary care physician,” said President and CEO Fran Palm. Read more: https://bit.ly/3TDbpr4 Watch on PBS / NJ Spotlight News: to.pbs.org/4dpscoU The expanded MAT services were made possible by a grant through the New Jersey Safety Net Innovation Program (NJ SNIP). NJ SNIP is funded by the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, an independent charitable organization, and managed by the Camden Coalition.

#Watch On June 15, Zufall Health and Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation partnered to host “Smiles for Our Heroes,” a day-long event that provided no-cost dental services to 70 NJ veterans. The festivities marked the return of the event after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees also enjoyed a variety of services and activities, including nutrition education, arts and crafts, chair yoga, blood pressure checks, COVID-19 vaccinations, therapy dogs, a patriotic ceremony with performances by the Denville String Band, and a barbecue lunch! We look forward to doing it again next year! #veterans #OralHealthCare #smilesforourheroes https://lnkd.in/ecJm6-eC
