Early connections last a lifetime.
About us
ZERO TO THREE is a national nonprofit organization that informs, trains and supports professionals, policymakers and parents in their efforts to improve the lives of infants and toddlers. Neuroscientists have documented that our earliest days, weeks and months of life are a period of unparalleled growth when trillions of brain cell connections are made. Research and clinical experience also demonstrate that health and development are directly influenced by the quality of care and experiences a child has with his parents and other adults. That is why at ZERO TO THREE our mission is to ensure all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. We know that as babies, the way we are held, talked to and cared for teaches us about who we are and how we are valued. This profoundly shapes who we will become. Early experiences set a course for a lifelong process of discovery about ourselves and the world around us. Simply put, early experiences matter. We encourage you to learn more about very young children, early development and the work of ZERO TO THREE by exploring our site. Explore opportunities at zerotothree.org/careers

Traditional treatment models for infants and toddlers and their parents often look at children from a single perspective, but dyadic care looks at each baby as part of a larger family system — and works to give everyone in that system the skills for success. At the most basic level, dyadic care means caring for both babies and their caregivers as a whole. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3ZyXKoP

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the recent natural disasters. To support families during this difficult time, we've gathered a range of helpful resources. Among them is "Trinka and Sam: The Rainy Windy Day" by Chandra Ghosh Ippen, published by Piplo Productions. This story follows two small mice who experience fear and worry after a severe hurricane impacts their community, showing how their parents help them express their feelings and regain a sense of safety. As many as one in five birthing parents struggle with a mental health disorder. Research shows that untreated maternal mental health issues, such as postpartum depression, can lead to significant long-term negative outcomes for both mothers and their children, including developmental delays and emotional difficulties in children. A recent Yale/Columbia University study shows racial discrimination experienced by women during pregnancy may affect their infant’s brain circuitry. Experiencing discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, or other factors can lead to chronic stress and feelings of marginalization, negatively impacting maternal mental health. Reseachers found that prenatal discrimination had an effect unlike other prenatal stressors. The infants’ brains displayed weaker connectivity between the amygdala and the prefontal cortex, which is associated with higher-order functioning.
