Marketers are the biggest storytellers for the brands they work at. But there’s more than one way to tell a brand story. Every marketer does it differently, and there's plenty to learn from listening to others. At York IE, we've featured some great marketers in our Marketer Spotlight series. This week, we have Jen Brown, director of marketing at Worldly. After years of wanting to go... So excited to head to #INBOUND24 THIS WEEK with the York IE team! We have our plan of attack, our schedules down and ready to tackle that #Boston traffic. We all can't wait to learn, network and be part of the HubSpot community. Expect more updates out of the event this week!

CEO York IE - Building successful tech companies through advisory & investment💰

York IE is an advisory and venture capital firm for technology companies. We have a mission to be a one stop resource (R&D, GTM and G&A) and capital provider (early stage venture funds and a network of 300+ later stage partners) for startups. We've achieved some impressive feats in the first five years of our business working hard and doing things our way. The opportunity is enormous! There are pros and cons being left to your own devices! We have no formal board of directors outside our co-founders and managing partners. We own, operate and govern our own business. I'm the majority owner. My name is on the masthead. This makes for ultimate freedom in running our business as founders, executives and operators. From a stage perspective, we've bootstrapped our way to become an established and formidable company -- revenue scale, product maturity, team size, customer base, established partnerships, fund size, fund LPs, total investments, market opportunity etc. We have no outside venture capital or private equity investors funding our operating company, which in turn is typically when a board of directors gets formalized. We're a rare breed to get to this point in the startup journey on our own accord, especially within the SaaS business model. We were recently even named Inc. 5000 for our hard earned efforts. It's working well, but we have all the relatable challenges like the many startups in our investment portfolio and advisory client base. We're all figuring it out together, the best we can, but to get to the next level we need help too. So, what did we do? We created a strategic advisory board to meet quarterly to help advise us short, mid and long term. Similar cadence, presentation, checkpoint and accountability as a formal board. We recruited distinguished industry veterans in our market (professional services/consulting) from larger enterprises to help us realize our vision to SaaS-ify and technology enable an old space. We are Advisory as a Service! Most CEOs wouldn't let others in the tent, most founders would avoid this structure and rigor, most operators would be reluctant to introduce additional voices. Not us. Our vision is to reshape the way startups are built, scaled and monetized. To do so, we need to challenge ourselves each and every day. This new group will be an integral piece of our success in the future! Rising tides! 🧠

💰 Over $600,000 in development savings 🎯 15% reduction in development costs ☁️ 80% cloud provider consolidation 📈 30% faster ramp-up time These are just some of the results Broadlume has seen from working with us. And our hybrid onshore/offshore model — U.S.-based product strategists plus full stack dev teams from our India office — is a big reason why. “In the past, I’ve done work with firms where everybody is offshore, and it’s hard to get that same level of accountability,” says Sean Bave. “York IE is an integrated part of the team.” Learn more about Broadlume's story and see how our Product Strategy and Development team can help you: https://hubs.la/Q02P0gq40

Is your software quality not up to snuff? Too many bugs? The structure of your QA department might be to blame. Quality assurance is vital for fast-moving technology companies. But there’s no one-size-fits-all QA department structure. The QA team for a private-equity-backed enterprise technology company will look a lot different than that of an early-stage startup — both in its size and its methods. Mike Veilleux shares some tips for structuring a QA department that meets your specific needs: https://hubs.la/Q02LClBJ0

Kyle York on what winning founders need to do from day one. "Founders need to set the long-term vision of what they want to be and what they want to build. Then, make sure that every decision you make is working towards fulfilling that vision." It's really that simple. Check out more of Kyle's takes on the latest episode of the Practical Founders podcast, hosted by Greg Head.

Founder, Practical Founders. Paid advisor to 40 practical SaaS founders who are building valuable software companies without big funding | Host of Practical Founders Podcast | LinkedIn Top Voice

The most common conversation with a new software founder starts with the question, “What should I do about _____?” I reply, “There are several ways to do it. It depends on what kind of company you are trying to create in 5 or 10 years.” If you want to create a big company with a massive exit someday, there are playbooks for that, including raising big VC funding to “Get Big Fast.” If you want to create a valuable company in your own way and sell it for life-changing wealth, there are many ways to do that. But they don’t involve professional VC investors. Practical Founders exists because there is (still) so much confusion by startup B2B SaaS founders about which end game they are aiming at—so they can make better decisions today. Kyle York is an experienced SaaS revenue leader and entrepreneur with several big exits. Now he runs York IE, his practical investment firm that also offers tech-enabled services to help early-stage B2B SaaS companies grow. They are helping over 100 B2B software companies grow, including some of the 60++ SaaS companies his team has invested in. We talked about how startup founders can increase their odds of their success on the podcast this week. Kyle shared some very practical advice: "It's gonna sound so simple, but founders need to set the long-term vision of what they want to be and what they want to build. Then, make sure that every decision you make backward to today is working towards fulfilling that vision. "What I see too often is companies pigeonholing themselves down a certain trajectory or path that isn't even aligned exactly with what they wanted. This can create problems when you're raising money from outside investors if what investors want is not the same as your vision and timeline." Founder-funding fit is real. There are many ways to do it, including funding it yourself, with revenue, with small investors or big investors. Choose wisely. In this expert interview, Kyle also shares: - The current environment for funding, growth, and exits for practical founders. - What’s working and not working in 2024 to drive growth in capital-efficient SaaS businesses. - Why his efficient funding approach appeals to practical SaaS founders and how it is different from traditional VC funding. Check out this insightful interview with Kyle York on the Practical Founders Podcast at https://lnkd.in/gcASyNCB Thanks for your support of founders and the practical approaches that work for them, Kyle. #practicalfounders

BizOps is always challenging — especially for startups. To build your business in a responsible and successful way, you need operations that are efficient, effective and scalable. Here are 3 tips from Janelle Gorman, Kristin R. Russum, SPHR and Chris Combs 🚀: 1. Automated systems create consistency, reduce admin burdens and ensure a smoother experience for both employees and management. 2. Make strategic trade-offs — particularly around staffing decisions. Should you rely on freelancers, fractional resources, full-time hires or technology? Make educated decisions based on your specific business needs and stage of growth. 3. Step out of your comfort zone so you can gain valuable insights. In the early days of LinkSquares, for example, Chris felt it was important for the founders to handle various roles and tasks themselves. Janelle, Kristin and Chris had a full discussion about these topics and more. Watch it all here: https://hubs.la/Q02P02b20
