30 Years. 30 Prizes. 30x Impact. 2024 marks 30 years of XPRIZE tackling the world’s greatest challenges head-on. From addressing the climate crisis to helping bring clean water to all, we’re just getting started. The world as we know it has evolved rapidly since 1994. The year XPRIZE launched: 🖥️ The internet was born. AI and robotics were in their nascent stages, and quantum computers didn’t exist. 🌎 The average global temperature was 54.7°F, it is now 55.6°F. Carbon removal technologies were not in development. 🔥 Wildfires burned 1,640,238 hectares in the US. By 2023, that number had risen to 2,633,636 hectares. 🩺 Life expectancy for women was 79.1 years, and 72.3 for men. It has now increased to 80.2 and 74.8 respectively. As humanity’s most threatening problems continue to grow, we’re faced with more urgency than ever for cutting-edge ideas, scientific discovery, and critical thinking. We’re addressing the problems above, and countless others, through our groundbreaking competitions including #XPRIZECarbonRemoval, #XPRIZEHealthspan, #XPRIZEWildfire, and #XPRIZEQuantumApplications. We’re dedicated to ensuring innovation never ceases to benefit humanity. Join us as we continue to architect a future of equitable abundance. #XPRIZECarbonRemoval wrapped up #ClimateWeekNYC with the premiere of Legion 44, an inspiring documentary by visionary documentary filmmaker Leila Conners of Tree Media Group. 🎬 This film takes a deep dive into the world of carbon removal, exploring why it is absolutely vital for the future of our planet. We were beyond thrilled to see FIVE of our XPRIZE Carbon Removal finalist teams—Heirloom, Octavia Carbon/Cella, Silicate, Planetary, and 44.01—featured in the film, alongside the prize’s Executive Director, Nikki Batchelor. Legion 44 offers a rare, in-depth look at the innovative solutions these teams are developing to remove carbon from both land and oceans, highlighting their ingenuity in leveraging natural systems and cycles that already exist to get to gigatonne-scale removal by 2050. These extraordinary teams represent a rising legion of companies dedicated to scaling carbon dioxide removal (CDR) innovations around the world. We couldn’t be more proud to see their work highlighted on such a powerful platform. The documentary is set to be released soon, and we can't wait for everyone to experience it. Bringing this film to mainstream audiences is a huge leap forward in raising awareness and driving public understanding of CDR and its potential to reshape our world. This is more than just a film—it’s a movement, and we’re honored to be part of it. Check out the teaser for the Legion 44 documentary below which features #XPRIZECarbonRemoval teams Heirloom, Octavia Carbon, Silicate, Planetary, Project Hajar and prize Executive Director Nikki Batchelor. The XPRIZE Carbon Removal team had a great time at the documentary's premiere during #ClimateWeekNYC. Stay tuned for our recap post!
I’ve been working on a project, Legion 44, that some people may have heard of given that I’ve kept off of socials for the last couple years for the most part. I’ve been in observation of what has been unfolding but now with the release of this film I will weigh in on some things. To start, and suffice it to say, when we all work together, we can fix a lot of problems. I have been inspired by the people I met in the journey to create Legion 44. I’m inspired by what the Earth does to provide us a home and I’m inspired by what we can do when we collaborate with and understand the natural cycles of our home. I look forward to sharing with you the path that we took to make this movie, who we’ve met along the way, who helped us, and who has innovated to create things that will indeed have massive and positive impact. It is also up to all of us to look beyond conflict and towards solutions, to look beyond fear and look towards building a world that works for everyone. Thank you and enjoy the teaser for Legion 44... much much more to come. 💫 Max Zeller Mark Tluszcz Dirk Paessler Brendan Wallace Benjamin Schulz Alexandra Woodward Mathew Schmid Fabian Nilsson Paulina Villalonga Abascal Albert Wenger Susan (Gigi) Danziger Allon Bloch Hans-Jürgen Schmitz Guy Harles Climeworks Cella Lithos Carbon Seafields Solutions Limited 44.01 Silicate Carbon180 Carbonfuture Planetary Heirloom SYNCRAFT KenGen Kenya Great Carbon Valley Octavia Carbon Flux University of Pennsylvania Max Pisciotta, Ph.D. Sebastian Manhart AIR COMPANY XPRIZE Absolute Climate #cdr #impact #carbon #solutions #resilience #innovation #climatesolutions
