The dedicated community of Licua-Sede in Angola has shown remarkable commitment to fostering change under the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative. With support from the Association for the Conservation of the Environment and Integrated Rural Development (ACADIR) and the Municipality of Mavinga, they have developed sustainable ways to enhance their livelihoods through nature-based solutions. The community successfully cleared 2 kilometres of water channels along the Luengue River. Additionally, through the Women's Association, a group of 20 women and 9 men, including 8 youths, transformed 1,600 square metres of land into agricultural plots, now cultivating onions, tomatoes, and garlic. Recently, they harvested 136 kilograms of garlic, packaging it into 9 sacks of 16 kilograms each. These will be sold for 16,000 Angolan Kwanza (approximately $17.23) per sack. The proceeds will be reinvested into purchasing seedlings, and part of the funds will go towards buying school books for local pupils. REVIVING THE KAFUE FLATS: A 20-YEAR CONSERVATION ALLIANCE BETWEEN WWF, ICF, DNPW, AND EWT 9th October, 2024 - WWF Zambia, in partnership with the International Crane Foundation, Endangered Wildlife Trust, and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, has embarked on a 20-year mission to conserve and restore the Kafue Flats. The alliance celebrated another significant milestone in their joint 20-year commitment to conserve and restore the Kafue Flats, a globally important wetland. WWF Zambia’s Country Director, Nalucha Nganga-Ziba, emphasised the organisation’s deep-rooted commitment: "WWF has long been a steward of the Kafue Flats. This dedication was first demonstrated nearly 60 years ago when we, as part of a consortium, purchased Lochinvar and donated it to the government to be declared a National Park. Our commitment has never faltered, and we now embark on this 20-year journey with renewed strength to preserve this wetland's rich biodiversity." The Kafue Flats, one of Zambia’s eight RAMSAR sites, is home to abundant birdlife and once supported large populations of key herbivores, such as wildebeest and eland. However, the population of Kafue lechwe has significantly declined from over 100,000 to fewer than 25,000. Community engagement and the blessings of traditional authorities are vital to restoring the flats' cultural, spiritual, and ecological values. Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Honourable Rodney Malindi Sikumba underscored the vital importance of harmonising human development with the protection of the Kafue Flats, recognised as a Man and Biosphere Reserve. “Strong collaboration among all stakeholders is key and our ministry will ensure long-term conservation and sustainable stewardship of this ecologically significant wetland,” he said. Dr. Rich Beilfuss, CEO of the International Crane Foundation, remarked that the Kafue Flats is one of the most important wetlands in Zambia, where herds of lechwe once thrived alongside the livelihoods, cattle, and agriculture on the surrounding plains. "We must prioritise sustainable practices that benefit both local communities and the wildlife of the Kafue Flats, ensuring a harmonious balance for future generations,” he stated. This partnership aims to restore the pride and biodiversity of the Kafue Flats for future generations.
