Today’s retail environment includes high levels of turnover, and to adapt, many employers have used cross-training as a tool to provide avenues for employee growth and bolster their own retention efforts. Matthew Rothman, who leads early talent development at Hannaford Supermarkets, explains Hannaford’s approach to cross-training for the New England-based grocery retailer's 180+ stores and 29,000 associates. https://lnkd.in/ePFNYaNU

Education benefits should be accessible to everyone, from the mailroom to the boardroom. Too often, benefits policies favor only certain types of employees—full-time, managerial, or corporate, for example. Not only does this feel alienating to other workers, but it also leaves a lot of human potential untapped, often in lower-wage roles. When you invest in everyone, you’re better positioned to reap the full benefits of a more skilled workforce. If your budget doesn’t allow for a full slate of options for all employees, consider offering different education options to different groups of employees. Consider non-degree opportunities and supporting employees on leave. Want other suggestions on how to update your policy? Ambiguity in policies can deter employees from utilizing their education benefits. For example, many companies require that employees be “in good standing” to take advantage of tuition benefits. It’s a reasonable requirement, but employees are often confused about what it means. If “good standing” is one of your requirements - provide a clear definition of what it means, be transparent with each employee and their status, and show them the specific steps they must take to achieve good standing if needed. Strategic Education, Inc’s 2024 Workforce Survey of more than 2,000 U.S.-based full-time employees sought to understand how employees perceive their own skills gaps. The headline? The upskilling opportunities employers are offering may not be enough to close the skills gap. While a majority (53%) of full-time workers report that their employer provides or supports upskilling opportunities through in-house trainings, half of U.S. workers worry about gaining the skills needed to advance their career. Meanwhile, less than a third of employees receive tuition benefits from their employer. To learn more about how employers can boost their upskilling game, visit UpskillingSurvey.com.

Many companies have been able to remove barriers to education by setting up a direct bill structure, where funds flow directly from the employer to the education provider, eliminating out-of-pocket costs for the employee. It also gets rid of time-consuming and error-prone reimbursement processes. Consult your education benefits management platform to identify and offer compatible education providers. Get the right people involved and keep the number of approvers small. One person is ideal, two at the most. Involving fewer people in the approval process speeds things up and reduces the number of opinions—and potential biases—involved. And if those approvers are within the Learning and Development or Human Resources function, it eliminates the potential for managers to stand in the way of employees’ growth.
