"The algorithms will use precipitation predictions to estimate how high county creeks will rise during storm events, allowing emergency managers to get ahead of the floodwaters instead of chasing after them." A great article from WFAE on why Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services contracted Woolpert to develop a flood forecast system using machine learning—and how it will help alert and assist emergency responders. #floodprediction #emergencyresponse #machinelearning Steve Godfrey Carla Muscarella J.P. Woolpert's Joseph Bissaillon presented alongside Brian Zimmerman of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Nichole Lashley of ASC Group, Inc. and ASC/Auxano at this week's Society of American Military Engineers Kittyhawk Post luncheon. Outlining the decision-making process used to design the demolition of the decommissioned nuclear reactor in Piqua, Ohio, Joseph, Brian, and Nichole discussed the challenges encountered as well as the decisions that were made throughout the design and deconstruction process to help mitigate the long-term risk of radiological release and ensure the safety of the surrounding community. #SAME #KittyhawkPost #engineering Doug Brown Sharon Aurelio

Great work this week by Jeff Pesler, AICP, IAM, and Eric Dillinger, who facilitated an impactful communication workshop for the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA) Ideaction Conference. Woolpert, which already has a strong geospatial footprint on the continent, has been expanding the solutions and technologies we deliver to clients across Australia. This includes the great work of Jeff, Eric, and our entire facility management consulting team. #consulting #architecture #engineering #geospatial #AEG Woolpert Asia-Pacific
Really insightful workshop presented by Woolpert's Eric Dillinger and Jeff Pesler, AICP, IAM at the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA) Ideaction Conference in Melbourne this week. A very diverse conference which I believe is due to the many different pathways that people find themselves getting into Facility Management. The workshop discussed how changing language can change outcomes. For example instead of talking about features (e.g. this design is to complex), to link this to benefits (simplifying this design would lead to significant cost savings in construction and maintenance). I always find it a great learning experience attending conferences from industries that I have had limited exposure to. Woolpert Asia-Pacific

Last week, our team spent a beautiful evening out on the Chicago River with the Society of American Military Engineers Lake Michigan Post to support local veteran and military family support organizations Fisher House Foundation of Illinois and V.E.T. Service Dogs. "I come from a military family, so supporting our veterans is important to me," Woolpert Discipline Leader Leah Stender said. "This year, one of the nonprofits the SAME boat cruise raised money for was the V.E.T. Service Dogs, an organization and cause close to my heart. In 2021, my dad, a Vietnam veteran, Wounded-In-Action, and retired Army Command Sergeant Major, was approved for his service dog, Justice—and I’ve seen firsthand how a service dog can improve the health, healing, and recovery for veterans—as well as how essential these types of fundraisers and nonprofits are in order to get veterans the services they need." A special thank you to Leah, who kindly shared two photos of her father, CSM William H. Ostenberg IV and his service dog, Justice. You can learn more about V.E.T. A huge congratulations to Old Dominion University on the opening of its new Ellmer College of Health Sciences building! “As designers, we are proud of our work and are aware of the time, effort, and dedication expended to get to the finish line," Woolpert Program Director for Interiors and Private Markets Kristi Barker, CID, NCIDQ said. "Seeing the community come together to acknowledge that effort and the effect the building is already having on the community is uplifting. The new Ellmer College of Health Sciences building will not only be a place that educates future generations of health sciences professionals, but it also includes spaces that will provide necessary dental and physical therapy services to the greater Norfolk community."
