Advancing Women of Color in Engineering

About us

The Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative (WCEC) is a collective entity dedicated to providing organizations with resources to create a supportive, encouraging, and inclusive environment for women of color in engineering. Its strategic plan is the outcome of multiple meetings of representatives from over 20 STEM-focused organizations who have committed to ensuring a more diverse and inclusive engineering workforce, and one that is welcoming, supportive, and appreciative of women from all backgrounds for the talents and skills that they bring to their workspaces. Funded by the National Science Foundation Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science Program, Awards 2040634 and 2310386, the Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative (WCEC) is a partnership network of professional engineering associations, STEM-based companies, and higher education institutions dedicated to addressing systemic barriers that prohibit equitable work environments for women engineers of color. Through the WCEC, partner organizations will better leverage their resources to promote systemic change while working collectively to decrease the barriers that lead to the attrition of women engineers of color.

  • Happy Women's Equality Day! August 26 is a national day commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This amendment, passed in 1920, granted women* the right to vote. That legislation was the culmination of nearly a century-long movement for women's rights. Women's Equality Day celebrates the wins of the past and the continued efforts toward improving our futures. *While some women were granted the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, many others were still denied representation in politics based on their race.

Frontend Engineer | Accessibility | Celebrates Neurodiversity 🧠 and Inclusion | React | JavaScript

Amazing accessibility webinar today hosted by Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative: Critical Accessibility Theory. Speaker Crystal Preston-Watson brought so much nuanced information and immediately actionable suggestions for both organizations and job-seekers. The tenant that stood out to me the most was: "The experiences of disabled people with technology are often told by those outside the community and filtered and changed to better fit popular narratives, leading to solutions that aren't needed or undesired." ^^ That is a big reason why I want to specialize in web accessibility as a frontend developer. We need to increase the amount of diversity on the creation side of things to more closely match the level of diversity of users. I want to be a part of that, as a woman and as a person with disabilities. We still have a long ways to go when it comes to removing unconscious (and conscious) bias towards people with disabilities in the hiring process and creating more safety for them to apply and interview. There is a wealth of talent here. I'm really passionate about this subject and very open to having discussions online and offline. Grateful to the host and the speaker for making this event possible and delivering such valuable content 💜 #diversityintech #accessibility #ADAanniversary
