In 2024 women’s elite sports will generate over $1B in revenue globally (+300%). Title IX was passed 52 years ago, and since then countless people have worked to make up for lost time. One of those great leaders is Marilou McFarlane, who founded Women in Sports Tech, Inc. in 2017 pathing the many girls playing high school and collegiate sports into careers in sports. Who better to lead women’s sports into the future, after all? The results: 114 Fellows, 7,500 candidates placed, and 100K+ participants in live and virtual events. Each WiST community member has made the teams they work with better. At NEXT VENTŪRES we have been lucky to host Fellows at ŌURA and Hammerhead, and partner directly with Fellows like Gauri Desai, MSc, PhD in our effort to improve the gender health equity gap. Our firm has been beneficiaries of WiST in so many immeasurable ways. Personally, Marilou has become a close mentor and friend. I have learned so much from her, and know this will continue as she closes this chapter. Marilou: Know that each of us will continue the work you started in building a gender inclusive sports industry. Thank you for your vision and leadership. And a big thanks to all those I was lucky to serve on the board with, as each of you are now dear friends and co-conspirators: Alysse Soll, Stephanie Howard, 📈 Amir Zonozi, Alexander Miles, Siobhan Dullea, Neda Tabatabaie, Lisa Nelson, Sandy Khaund, Glenna Patton, Jarvis Sam, Kendall Tyson, Vicki Dallas, Victoire H. Cogevina Reynal and Jill Stelfox. https://lnkd.in/g6H2ExMF

M.S. in Computer Science Student-Athlete at Virginia Tech | 2024 WiST Fellow with IBM Sports | Software Engineer | UX Researcher
As we officially head into the fall, I wanted to recap the amazing summer I had working with IBM iX Sports and Entertainment as a 2024 Women in Sports Tech, Inc. Fellow. It was a very exciting time to be working with IBM as they unveiled the first ever personalized GenAI Catch Up feature for sports at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, as well as an entirely redesigned Wimbledon SlamTracker. I am very thankful to my team, particularly to Kelly Hicks and Sara Perelman, for being great managers and mentors who gave me opportunities to be involved with both of these efforts. Before the tournament, I assisted with the final stages of training for the Catch Up feature. During the tournament I conducted a user experience study on the redesigned SlamTracker experience. After the tournament I presented the user study results to help prepare for the next event, the US Open, which has just gotten started! I also got to experience the thrill of working on a live event through helping the AI Highlights team produce content following every match of Wimbledon. In addition to being involved with the excitement of Wimbledon, I participated in ideation for the GRAMMYs in February, and analyzed trends in AI in sports to help with future projects. The IBM sports team is on a roll! I am excited to stay tuned for what will be coming next from them, and encourage everyone to go check out the US Open app this week. Women in Sports Tech, Inc. did a great job matching me with an internship that allowed me to explore all my various interests within the field of software engineering. I want to thank everyone on the team that gave me a look into their work to explore my interests, Eduardo Morales for giving me opportunities to explore the code behind all the features I was working on, Jenna Miller for giving me a peek into the US Open project management process, Stephen Hammer for giving me the opportunity to help with SEO tasks in addition to being a great AI Highlights manager, and Teddy Wellington for providing user study feedback. Lastly, I want to thank Monica Ellingson for making the entire internship possible through working with Women in Sports Tech and giving me such incredible managers on the team. I also received great support throughout my internship from the Women in Sports Tech network. Marilou McFarlane and Casey Saussy not only do a great job of supporting the fellows themselves, but introduced me to Annie Gerhart-Ramsay, an amazing mentor who helped advise me all summer and who will continue to be an important role model for me in the future. I strongly encourage any young women looking to go into sports technology to check out the Women in Sports Tech program. #WomenInSportsTech #CultureMatters

Excited to share that I recently wrapped up my summer as a Production Intern with NBCUniversal's LXTV/Skycastle Production Team! 🎬 This incredible experience deepened my understanding of the business behind commercial production. I got hands-on with pre-production, production, and post-production tasks—everything from pitching creatives, revising scripts and managing camera and lighting equipment, to refining final video edits. A standout moment was having the opportunity to add commercial spots directly to traffic, gaining insight into streamlined workflows that ensure effective entertainment delivery. 🧡 In addition, I was honored to be supported as a Women in Sports Tech, Inc. Fellow this year! Through the program, I connected with inspiring professionals in sports tech and met an amazing group of like-minded women who share my passion. 🏟 This summer was especially memorable with the 2024 Olympics at NBC, perfectly blending my interests in sports and production. Experiencing the company’s mobilization to distribute the games was truly inspiring, especially as Olympic coverage reached new viewership milestones. A huge thank you to Claudia Salmeron and Mariah Evans-Hovasse for their mentorship this summer, and to Rika Shinozaki, Marilou McFarlane, and Casey Saussy for their guidance throughout these incredible opportunities. As I head into my senior year, I’m excited to bring my new skills into the classroom and beyond. 😊
