The global landscape of Additive Manufacturing (AM) is evolving. While early adopters like the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom continue to increase their number of AM installations, their overall market share has gradually declined. In contrast, countries such as China and South Korea are rapidly expanding their AM capabilities, installing industrial systems at an accelerated rate. Interestingly, mostly smaller nations collectively categorized as 'Others' are also experiencing substantial growth in AM adoption. This trend suggests that AM technology is becoming more accessible and widespread across the globe, no longer limited to traditional manufacturing powerhouses. Context is crucial when trying to understand the global additive manufacturing landscape. This insight comes from Wohlers Report 2024. Additive manufacturing (AM) adoption varies significantly based on how we interpret the data. Simply counting the number of 3D printers sold in a country May not tell the whole story. The chart below shows country GDP on the x-axis and the number of industrial AM system installations on the y-axis. The installation-to-GDP ratio is represented by color and bubble size. While the U.S. and China lead in the total number of industrial AM system installations, these numbers are largely influenced by the size of their economies. When we adjust for economic output, countries such as South Korea, Italy, Japan, and Germany emerge as leaders with notably higher AM adoption rates. Context is crucial when trying to understand the global additive manufacturing landscape. This insight comes from Wohlers Report 2024. Wohlers Associates can help your organization make informed business decisions within this rapidly evolving field. https://lnkd.in/ggsZfxXZ Wohlers Associates, Powered by ASTM P.S. note that while Japan has experienced an almost steady rise in GDP, the recent decline in Yen had a notable impact on Japan’s GDP in U.S. Dollar and thus the Install-to-GDP ratio. This significant currency depreciation may offer a unique opportunity to AM investors (with all other factors included).

It's been a productive two days at the ASTM AM CoE Specialty Workshop on Techno-Economic Analysis for Metal Powder-Bed AM in Washington, D.C.! 💡Top 3 High-Level Takeaways from Our Recent #AdditiveManufacturing Conversation: ▪ Additive manufacturing is scaling rapidly. Companies are investing heavily in large-format printers and automation to drive down costs and boost productivity. ▪ Successful AM companies focus on early adoption, expertise, and unique applications. Early adopters who build deep technical knowledge and identify high-value applications are maximizing the potential of this technology. ▪ Advancements in machine capabilities, software, and workforce development are enhancing AM's competitiveness. Continued improvements are making additive manufacturing more cost-effective and accessible across industries. Additional Insights from the Panel: ▪ Scaling requires vertical integration and early adoption. Companies that combine precision machining with additive capabilities gain a competitive edge. Those who adopt early and build expertise are positioning themselves for long-term success. ▪ Cost-competitiveness is tied to design and machine utilization. Designing parts specifically for additive manufacturing and achieving 80-90% machine utilization are key to maximizing cost benefits. ▪ Collaboration and qualification standards are essential. Industry-wide collaboration on common part classification standards and strong partnerships between OEMs, manufacturers, and software/material providers are crucial for continuous improvement in AM. Thank you to the Panel Moderator, Brandon Ribic (America Makes), and Panelists, Kevin Czinger (Divergent), Shane Collins, (Wohlers Associates, Powered by ASTM), Joseph Calmese (ADDMAN), Sean Whittaker (Incodema3D, LLC), and Nicholas Mulé (Boeing), for contributing to the conversation.
