October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and at Winchester Hospital, we're doing all we can to help our patients battle this disease. According to Patricia Graham, Manager at our Breast Care Center, “breast cancer accounts for 52 percent of all the cancers we treat in women." Thanks to advancements in science, when caught in its earliest, localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99 percent. Our Breast Care Center team recently spoke with the Daily Times Chronicle to discuss some of the ways in which Winchester Hospital treats breast cancer. Winchester Hospital is proud to announce that our vascular team performed its first Transcarotid Artery Revascularization procedure (TCAR). TCAR is a minimally invasive procedure that can clear blockages and open narrowed carotid artery. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the common carotid artery to perform the repair and the surgical team reverses blood flow in the area of the blockage.
