We provide advanced computer vision and machine learning solutions to the wildlife research community.

About us

Wildlife Imaging Systems provides advanced computer vision and machine learning solutions to the wildlife research community, from field-ready video capture hardware to advanced video processing algorithms. We believe that there is incredible potential for video to provide better data to help wildlife biologist, but the main barrier is the complexity. The first place we are focusing is to eliminate any conflict between wind and solar energy deployment and wildlife, smoothing the path to a world powered by renewables. This rapid deployment of renewables is needed to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on wildlife species all around the globe. This would create a virtuous cycle of saving local wildlife from renewable energy’s impacts while benefiting global wildlife at the same time by increasing renewable energy generation. The better we are at saving local species, the more impact we can have on saving global species.

  • “Another dimension, another dimension”* - sage lyrics from renowned wildlife enthusiasts, the Beastie Boys. That’s right, we have extended our wildlife monitoring system in the next dimension, 2D -> 3D! With our 3D Wildlife Tracking Systems, we will be able to do two very important things:  * Monitor 3D bat activity around onshore wind turbines to answer questions about how bats are using the airspace under different wind conditions. Are bats flying lower in the RSA when the wind speed is higher due to wind shear? We’ll find out!  * Track birds around offshore wind turbines to better characterize collision risk. Bird flight heights, fluxes and avoidance rates are critical inputs into collision risk models (CRM) and our system will be able to measure them. *Bonus points if you can name the track the lyrics came from.

I am excited to announce that Wildlife Imaging Systems has received a Phase 2 extension to our DOE SBIR award for developing “A Cost-Effective 3D Wildlife Tracking System”! We are going to extend the monitoring work that we currently do in 2D to 3D! Our solution will use the same thermal security cameras we have successfully deployed to monitor wildlife activity and will automatically calibrate itself using only the video collected. With these systems we will be able to do two very important things: * Monitor 3D bat activity around onshore wind turbines to answer questions about how bats are using the airspace under different wind conditions. Big thanks to Jaden Varin, Jonathan Ritter and Henning Fischel for all their hard work getting us here. We are excited to take our work to the next dimension! #thermalimaging #wildlifeconservation #offshorewind #bats #birds

  • Some amazing news from our founder Brogan Morton. This is our first offshore project and we will be using all the same tech we use onshore for bats. We can't wait to see what those first summary images look like!

We are very excited to announce that we are conducting an offshore bird fatality study with Vattenfall this summer. We have been working with them to install 16 cameras at the Hollandse Kust offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. We will be monitoring for both fatality as well as activity, so we hope to provide a holistic picture of what is happening around the turbine. It has been a pleasure working with Jesper Kyed Larsen and Bjarke Laubek and we can’t wait to see what the data looks like! • What a fun way to get around the forest!

😍 Look at the cute little squirrel. 😲 IT JUMPED OUT OF THE TREE!!! 😌 Ohhh, it's flying. You see lots of cool things when you take thermal video in the forest looking for bats, but nothing is quite as exciting as watch a little squirrel jump off a tree and glide to the next one! We would like to thank the Forest Service and the good folks at White Mountain National Forest Pemigewasset Ranger District for sharing these videos with us. https://lnkd.in/e2TCpFV8

    Surprising squirrels!

I am honored to be speaking at the American Clean Power Association (ACP) Siting and Permitting conference this March in Colorado! I will be discussing the "Relationship Between Bat Fatality Rate and Exposed Bat Activity Using Thermal Cameras". We will be sharing data from a project we collaborated on with the great Sara Weaver at Bowman Consulting. If you attending the conference please connect with me to set up a time to chat. I would like to give a big shout out to Jonathan Ritter and Henning Fischel here at Wildlife Imaging Systems for making the magic happen with the thousands of hours of video we collect. Without them none of this would be possible.

Please come visit Jonathan Ritter and I at the Wildlife Imaging Systems booth at Vermont Tech Jam on October 21st at Hula. Tech Jam is an annual career and tech expo that showcases some of Vermont’s most innovative companies. We are recruiting for a software engineer and interns for next summer, so if you are a techie with a passion for renewable energy and wildlife conservation, we’d love to talk with you.
