The passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 2370 in California underscores the state’s commitment to preserving the essential role of qualified #humaninstructors. This bill requires that credit and non-credit instructors in #communitycollege courses meet them minimum qualifications set by the Board of Governors of the California Community College. Human instructors “remain essential for fostering #studentengagement, critical thinking, and emotional well-being. California’s legislative efforts surrounding #AIineducation highlight a three-pronged approach: prioritization of #humanteachers and #ethicaleducation, #workerprotections, and ethical and quality considerations. Although the bill aims to protect human educators, it could hinder #AIenhanced #educationinnovation. Do you believe your state will pass a similar bill? Administrators overseeing #onlineeducation believe that a federal plan to require #colleges to take attendance in #virtualcourses would create significant time demands on #faculty members and increase cost burdens on institutions. The U.S. Education Department proposed this change as part of a larger package of federal policies designed to protect #students and hold institutions accountable. The goal is to avoid students dropping out of #onlinecourses while the institution collects Title IV financial aid funds. In order to inform ongoing plans to support WCET members and others in our complex work, we conducted a brief survey Iast month to better understand institutional awareness around the revised #ADAregulation. WCET collaborated with both the State Authorization Network (SAN) and NWHEAT and received 205 responses representing a range of institutions and organizations. Respondents were asked if they were generally aware of the #newregulation. An overwhelming majority (81%) answered “Yes.” When asked if their institution has taken any action to begin addressing compliance, a majority (61%) responded “Yes.” Learn more about the #surveyresults today on #WCETFrontiers: https://ow.ly/j4Lq50T9LSz

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of our cherished Executive Director, Russell Poulin, after an incredible 30 years with WCET and the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. While we are thrilled for Russ as he embarks on this next chapter, we can’t help but feel a bit sad to see him go. We wish Russ a happy and healthy next phase of his life, he has most certainly earned it! We hope that he enjoys a retirement full of movie nights with his wife, Laurie, and their cat, Luna. We look forward to celebrating Russ’s remarkable achievements at the WCET #AnnualMeeting this fall. Russ’ last day will be December 31. The search for the new Executive Director of WCET and Vice President of #DigitalLearning for WICHE has now been opened.
