Juliet and Brian Jegasothy were newlyweds when they immigrated to the U.S. in 1969. They came from Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka, and as Juliet remembered it, getting used to American traditions could be a little scary 😱 One night, Juliet was home alone with her infant daughter, when she heard a knock at the door. At StoryCorps she recounts a spooky night in her new home. #storycorps #halloweenstory #scarystories #publicmedia #npr

Dr. Monroe previously served as the assistant superintendent with Caroline County Public Schools, as well as a high school and elementary school principal in Henrico. What’s his vision for the Surry Schools- and what are the unique challenges and needs for teachers and students in a rural district versus counterparts in large urban schools? How is the district addressing chronic absenteeism and implementing Governor Youngkin’s All in VA mandate on learning loss due to the pandemic? We answered these questions and more! After graduating from the Naval Academy and serving 12 years as a helicopter pilot and instructor, Julie Hendricks has taken on a new commission — poll worker. With misinformation often aimed at the military community, the nonpartisan We the Veterans and Military Families stepped in to organize a campaign of civic engagement that aims to promote and support confidence in U.S. elections. The project, Vet the Vote, launched in April 2022 and focuses on recruiting veterans and their family members to become poll workers across the country. Since its inception, Vet the Vote says it has recruited more than 160,000 veterans and their family members as poll workers across the country. #DemocracyAtWorkVA #ProtectWeThePeople

Come see the award-winning short, "Uprooted," at the Virginia Film Festival 🎥 This collaboration with ProPublica and Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO will be screening Sunday, November 3rd at 8:20pm at Violet Crown 5. 🎬 About the Film - "Uprooted" In the 1960s, residents wanted a thriving Black neighborhood in Newport News, Virginia, to keep growing. White city leaders wanted that land for a new college. Only one side had the power of eminent domain. The Johnsons, one of the last families in the neighborhood, tell the nearly forgotten story of a college expansion like the ones that broke up Black communities across Virginia and the country. #WHROPublicMedia #VCIJ #ProPublica
