About us

Westminster Abbey is one of the world's great churches. It has been the setting for every coronation since that of William the Conqueror in 1066 and for countless other great events in the life of the nation. Thirty kings and queens lie buried within the Abbey’s walls, and many great men and women from our history are commemorated here, from statesmen and soldiers to scientists, writers and artists. Every year more than a million visitors from around the world come to explore this wonderful 750-year-old building. Thousands more come to worship at the daily services which are at the heart of life at the Abbey. The Abbey is an exciting, fascinating place to work. Our 600 highly-committed staff and volunteers are dedicated to caring for the Abbey and for all who visit and worship here. Our community is made up of clergy, musicians, vergers, conservators, stonemasons, teachers, visitor welcome and security staff, and many more besides. The Abbey is also home to the thriving Westminster Abbey Institute which aims to renew faith in public life, and to the Abbey's Foundation which raises funds to protect the Abbey, its collections and musical heritage for today and for future generations. Join the Westminster Abbey Institute for an exciting new chapter to help deliver their emerging strategy for renewing faith in public life. Building on the success of their first decade the Institute is now focusing on work in three key areas: supporting the Institute’s talented and diverse Fellowship community, strengthening parliamentary and institutional engagement, and expanding public programmes. We’re looking for three Deputy Directors to each oversee one of these areas, and a Programme Officer to provide support across all three. In these newly created roles you’ll have the opportunity to grow the Institute’s reach and impact for the future, and to make a significant contribution to public life. Applications close this week at 5pm on Sunday 8 September. Last Thursday, the Abbey's Communications and Digital Team spent a day volunteering at leading homelessness charity The Passage . Preparing and serving food to clients, the team witnessed the range of services The Passage offers, including accommodation, housing support, healthcare, employment and chaplaincy. The Abbey, a neighbour of The Passage in the heart of Westminster, recently made a £500,000 donation to support the charity’s No Night Out initiative, which works with people at risk of spending a first night on the streets, providing them with emergency accommodation while its staff offer one-to-one support to move them into safe and sustainable housing. The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, visited earlier this year to meet staff, volunteers and service users and find out more about the project. Find out more about the Dean’s visit and the Abbey’s collaboration with The Passage: https://lnkd.in/e4P_2H6H. #volunteering #change #charity

Here at the Abbey we're privileged to care for some remarkable treasures. Among the most precious is the Litlyngton Missal, a 14th-century manuscript commissioned by Nicholas Litlyngton, Abbot of Westminster from 1362-86, for the Abbey's High Altar. Its 682 pages contain the readings and prayers used at the celebration of the Mass, along with a calendar of festivals and saints' days. A scribe called Thomas Preston laid out the work and wrote the text. He lived in the monastery while working on the missal and later became a monk at the Abbey. Two unknown artists then painted the 62 illuminated initials and all of the decorative borders. A third artist produced a magnificent crucifixion scene - the only full-page illumination in the manuscript. You can see the missal on permanent display in our museum, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries: https://lnkd.in/efxZVX93
