Non-profit Organizations

Working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change and call for ambitious policy.

About us

We Mean Business is a global nonprofit coalition working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change. #FossilToClean Together we catalyze business leadership to drive policy ambition and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. All countries and all businesses can seize the opportunity and go all in to halve emissions by 2030. Together we can create an inclusive net zero economy, build resilient communities and limit global heating to 1.5°C. The low-carbon transition is underway and forward-looking businesses are harnessing climate action as a driver of innovation, competitiveness, risk management and growth. We are mobilizing businesses to set ambitious targets and equipping them to seize the opportunities of the low-carbon transition. Hundreds of businesses have helped kick-start this transition by setting science-based emissions reduction targets and taking action to deliver against those targets by committing to transition to 100% renewable power. But it is not happening fast enough. The necessary speed and scale of the transition requires all companies and sectors to engage proactively to reduce emissions at the rate required to avoid dangerous climate change. Which is why our coalition is working together to catalyze further, faster corporate climate action. The coalition brings together seven international nonprofit organizations: BSR, CDP, Ceres, The B Team, The Climate Group, The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group, WBCSD

  • 📣 Fifty companies today called on the EU to maintain its 2035 zero-emissions target for cars and vans. Signatories of the Industry for 2035 declaration argue that the target is ‘feasible and necessary’ and call on leaders to focus not on reopening it but on implementing what was agreed. With transport set to account for over half of Europe’s GHG emissions by 2030, they say the policy – alongside others adopted under the European Green Deal - gives Europe a fighting chance of curbing catastrophic climate change. The target also provides business with the ‘clear direction’ they need to help deliver the transformation required, and ‘much needed investment certainty on the future of the automotive industry in Europe’. As signatory, Jim Rowan of Volvo Cars, said: “Electrification is the single biggest action our industry can take to cut its carbon footprint... The 2035 target is crucial to align all stakeholders on this journey and ensure European competitiveness.”    Other executives and CEOs who support the declaration include Kenny Kristensen of A.P. Moller - Maersk, Rebecca Tinucci of Uber, Himanshu Raj of IKEA, and Tim Albertsen of Europe’s largest leasing company, Ayvens, alongside companies such as Iberdrola and Tesco. We’re delighted to see many companies from our #FossilToClean campaign on the list! Industry for 2035 was supported by Transport & Environment (T&E) and by EV100, an initiative of our Coalition partner Climate Group. Deputy Director - Policy at the We Mean Business coalition

🛫 As I am leaving New York City at the end of Climate Week, I am utterly exhausted. It was brilliant to see so many We Mean Business Coalition colleagues, partners and companies which we work with across the corporate climate ecosystem. My main takeaways after a busy week: - Serviced emissions- for most professional service providers the largest share of emissions inventories are in the impact of the advisory services they provide which are currently unaccounted for within science based targets. So great that they are now starting to be brought into the corporate climate architecture but still a long way to go to see how corporate public affairs or advertising, for example, will be accounted for. (https://lnkd.in/eUAYuTHd ) - On Responsible Policy Engagement – we were involved with two brilliant events highlighting corporate climate leadership and discussing with companies how they practicing RPE, where are the opportunities/challenges, especially with how they engage their trade groups. A huge amount to reflect on and to inform our further work on the RPE framework (https://lnkd.in/eM73JgjC). We heard from companies the need to refine the business case for why they engage on corporate climate advocacy, both internally within the company and externally with policymakers, which has particular sensitivities in the fractious US political landscape right now. Thanks to our partners for these events InfluenceMap Dylan Tanner Kendra Haven Caroline Heneghan Cleo Rank Jules Peck Tracey Rembert Tessa Vincent Amy Meyer Johan Falk Jennie Dodson - On going Fossil to Clean in the power sector, streamlining permitting and grid build out, was one of the hottest topic of the week. I loved these two catch lines which stuck me ‘there is no transition without transmission’ and  from Luciano Caratori ‘we need to turn PowerPoints into power lines’ - words into action! I am looking forward to the weekend to recover with my kids, where no one will ask me about the NCQG, NDCs, EU CSRD reporting, or scope 3 emissions, just if they can go to the swings!

  • 🆕 During this #ClimateWeekNYC, Potential Energy Coalition in partnership with We Mean Business Coalition and maslansky + partners have published “The Return on Responsibility,” a new messaging guide for business that is grounded in rigorous consumer and investor research. The guide unequivocally demonstrates the business imperative – and rewards – for tackling climate risks head on, investing in clean energy and talking about these efforts publicly. It aims to help companies confidently appeal to a wide range of stakeholders, while minimizing the potential for pushback. The research shows that:    ✔️ People are more likely to buy from, work for, admire, and speak well of companies that take climate action such as reducing carbon emissions or investing in clean energy  ✔️ Framing climate action as commonsense business strategy – because it is material to business – yields more benefits and less controversy for companies.    John Marshall, founder and CEO of Potential Energy Coalition, said, “Consumers and investors are demanding that businesses step up to address climate change. The data is clear: when businesses show their commitment to mitigating the risks and taking advantage of new opportunities, it is good for their brands.” Being vocal matters. Climate leadership from the business community can help set the tone for other businesses as well as world leaders, who are currently updating their national climate plans (#NDCs). A strong and united business voice will give government leaders confidence from the private sector to craft climate plans that deliver us all to a more stable future, and enable thriving economies.   Learn about the research and messaging insights in a new blog from María Mendiluce, CEO of We Mean Business Coalition, and download the guide: https://lnkd.in/dRbjSWY3

  • 🌎 During #ClimateWeekNYC, We Mean Business Coalition has re-affirmed our commitment to drive market-based action on climate change through the re-launch of the Beyond Alliance, formerly known as BASCS (the Business Alliance for Scaling Climate Solutions).    This exciting new re-brand reflects Beyond’s commitment to move above and beyond the status quo to deliver great climate action. As a leading coalition of companies and NGOs Beyond brings together first mover companies including Netflix, Meta, Amazon and Salesforce alongside NGOs such as Environmental Defense Fund and WWF.    With roughly 6 trillion in climate finance needed annually by 2030 to achieve the goals of the #ParisAgreement, Beyond highlights the need for transformative collaborations among corporate buyers, civil society experts and technical experts to accelerate the scale, impact and credibility of investments in climate solutions.    At the heart of this approach is catalyzing a community of practice that lets companies share lessons learned, best practices, and collectively tackle challenges to go further, faster.     🔗 Learn more about Beyond and how to get involved ➡️ www.beyond-alliance.org     #BeyondAlliance #WMBC 🏷️ Kerry Constabile Amazon Timothy Juliani WWF Devon Lake Meta María Mendiluce Luke Pritchard Max Scher Salesforce Emma Stewart, Ph.D. Netflix Elizabeth Sturcken Environmental Defense Fund
