Working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change and call for ambitious policy.

About us

We Mean Business is a global nonprofit coalition working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change. #FossilToClean Together we catalyze business leadership to drive policy ambition and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. All countries and all businesses can seize the opportunity and go all in to halve emissions by 2030. Together we can create an inclusive net zero economy, build resilient communities and limit global heating to 1.5°C. The low-carbon transition is underway and forward-looking businesses are harnessing climate action as a driver of innovation, competitiveness, risk management and growth. We are mobilizing businesses to set ambitious targets and equipping them to seize the opportunities of the low-carbon transition. Hundreds of businesses have helped kick-start this transition by setting science-based emissions reduction targets and taking action to deliver against those targets by committing to transition to 100% renewable power. But it is not happening fast enough. The necessary speed and scale of the transition requires all companies and sectors to engage proactively to reduce emissions at the rate required to avoid dangerous climate change. Which is why our coalition is working together to catalyze further, faster corporate climate action. The coalition brings together seven international nonprofit organizations: BSR, CDP, Ceres, The B Team, The Climate Group, The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group, WBCSD

🆕 "Before reading this blog, try to imagine eight trillion. It’s a number so large that it’s almost beyond our comprehension. But somehow we must grasp it because that’s how much money will need to be invested to meet the climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement - and all that must be done before 2030." - Andrew Prag, Managing Director of Policy at We Mean Business Coalition and Christina Hood, Climate change & Energy Policy, Carbon Markets Lead at Compass Climate. In their latest blog, Andrew and Christina address the immense challenge of meeting global climate targets, particularly the US $8 trillion spending target by 2030. One key insight they explore is how the private sector can learn from the Paris Agreement's framework, especially through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Under the Paris Agreement, governments commit to #NDCs, setting and revising national climate goals every five years and rigorously measuring progress through standardized reporting. Andrew and Christina also emphasize the importance of direct international comparisons and year-by-year progress tracking, as seen in the Paris Agreement. For companies, adopting common reporting formats and capturing not just Scope 1 but also Scope 2 and 3 emissions could drive higher standards and hold laggards accountable, ultimately leading to more meaningful climate action. However, creating the basis for comparison could be challenging. The blog captures some of the key findings of a new white paper published today by We Mean Business Coalition, Scaling up private sector action on climate change. Developing corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting guidance that aligns with the Paris Agreement    ❓ Interested in how the private sector can draw from the #ParisAgreement to enhance its climate finance efforts and scale investments? 🔗 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/efZ78eda #WMBC

  • 📢 In her latest op-ed in our 10 year anniversary series with Reuters, our CEO María Mendiluce reflects on the past decade of corporate climate advocacy. She highlights the role companies like Alphabet, Apple, Amazon, IKEA, Unilever, Nestlé, Danone, BT Group, HSBC, National Grid and Natura &Co have played in influencing significant policies such as the adoption of renewable energy standards across various U.S. states, an ambitious and practical European Green Deal, the UK’s net zero legislation, and Brazil’s National Policy on Climate Change. Yet despite progress, there is a notable gap between corporate climate ambition and the actual practice of engaging in coherent policy advocacy. Meanwhile, the growing importance of corporate advocacy in shaping climate policy has led to increased scrutiny of companies' climate goals against their political activities. 🔗 Read the full op-ed in Reuters: https://lnkd.in/eayxAfBz #ClimateAction

  • 🎧 New Episode: Is the Industry Taking the Wrong Approach to Scope 3 Emissions Reporting? How can we rethink Scope 3 to drive faster progress? Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reporting was designed to help businesses grasp their broader climate impact and take responsibility in the journey to #NetZero. However, as companies dive into Scope 3, many struggle with challenges around accounting and with developing strategies. So, how can the industry simplify this process? In the latest episode of the Interchange Recharged Podcast, Jenny Ahlen, Managing Director of Net Zero at the We Mean Business Coalition, joins host David Banmiller to discuss Scope 3. Jenny shares insights on the #SupplierCascade, a practical approach to accelerate supply chain decarbonization: “It simplifies the ask, so your procurement teams don’t suddenly need to be experts on enteric methane emissions or hydrogen as a replacement fuel. They can just ask their suppliers if they have a target or not.” The Supplier Cascade was created in partnership with BSR, CDP, Ceres, Inc., Environmental Defense Fund, Exponential Roadmap Initiative, SME Climate Hub and in collaboration with the Science Based Targets initiative. It is a strategy aimed at simplifying and scaling these efforts by requiring companies to ask their tier 1 suppliers to make a 1.5-aligned climate commitment and ask their own suppliers to do the same”. 🔗 Sign up to be an early adopter: https://lnkd.in/gBvU3TgT This approach is both inclusive and scalable: “The Supplier Cascade is something you can ask of all your suppliers, big and small, ensuring we don’t leave behind medium and small-sized companies that often aren’t included in these initiatives.” Jenny also explains why alternative reporting metrics are crucial for accelerating the #EnergyTransition. How can we create an ecosystem that incentivizes meaningful progress on a global scale? 🎙️ Listen to the full episode to find out: https://lnkd.in/g4zSh2KC #ClimateAction #Scope3Emissions

HEJ! We Mean Business Coalition here 👋 Check out our 2023 highlights… Last year we launched Fossil to Clean: a science-based, multi-year global campaign to mobilise businesses and governments in line with the decisive action needed to transition from fossil fuels to clean solutions. More than 200 companies signed a robust advocacy letter that was delivered to governments and other policymakers at #COP28, helping to achieve the first-ever global agreement to transition away from all fossil fuels 🌳 Read more on how we’re working to inspire greater climate leadership from businesses and governments around the world 👇 https://lnkd.in/dFG8vzEQ #AnnualReviewSeries #PeopleAndPlanet #IKEAFoundationHighlights2023

  • 🔔 Deadline extension: Business leaders can submit an application by the 13th of August to join We Mean Business Coalition’s taskforce to develop action checklists that will support businesses transitioning from #FossilToClean.     Why join? This project aims to fill a market gap by providing businesses with a simple, actionable checklist of near-term actions for the next two to five years to phase out fossil fuels and scale up clean solutions.     Supported by real-life case studies, this checklist will complement existing decarbonization and sector-specific guidance. It will translate business climate action into a robust demand signal to policymakers and stakeholders, accelerating the transition to clean energy in the build-up to #COP30 and countries revising their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).    📢 Call for Expertise  We have opened a Call for Applications for the Taskforce to shape the delivery of this guidance. We are especially looking for experts in procurement, #energy, and asset management at senior, head, and director levels.    🔗 Learn more and apply here: https://lnkd.in/eUwJk2bc     #WMBC #ClimateAction #ApplyNow    🏷 María Mendiluce Rasmus Valanko (he/him)Santeri Palomäki Molly Walton Emily Huynh Claire H. Kristen King
