#ThrowbackThursday to Oct. 11, 1975, when Newport News Shipbuilding laid the keel for USS Carl Vinson (#CVN70) and christened USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (#CVN69) during a dual ceremony. About 8,000 people were on hand to watch the keel authentication for CVN 70 before witnessing CVN 69 Ship’s Sponsor Mamie Eisenhower – the widow of President Dwight D. Eisenhower – christen that aircraft carrier. Following the christening, CVN 69 was launched and moved to a pier for outfitting work. Take a look at these photos from that busy day 49 years ago.

From The Magnolia State to The Golden State! ☀️ America-class amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (#LHA7) and San Antonio-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Somerset (#LPD25), both built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, transit underneath the Golden Gate Bridge in support of San Francisco Fleet Week 2024 on October 6. We're incredibly proud that our ships were part of the 43rd year of this time-honored sea service celebration and that the people of California's Bay Area were able to witness these manifestations of our shipbuilders' dedication to serving the sailors of the US Navy so they can serve our great nation. #FleetWeekSF 📸: U.S. Navy / MC1 Monford
