Here for the Impact Uprising ✨ Co-Founder + CEO, We Are For Good / Podcaster / Keynote Speaker / Creative Entrepreneur

Community building. Ahh. ✨ We all want a magic bullet… For gathering. For growth. For mobilizing. But magic isn’t a great strategy… so I’m sharing a few beliefs + actions below that have worked in my journey. 👇 But first… some community-building truths. Know this: #1 No two communities are the same. And friend, that is the beauty of it. People are the lifeblood of community, so by design... no two communities would be the same. #2 Authentic community building doesn’t happen overnight. This is a good thing! Slow burn is the way. I’ll explain more below. One more quick note: I broke down some of these thoughts on my buddy Adam’s rad podcast from iDonate called Digitally Native (find it on Spotify or linked up in the comments below!) So what are some beliefs + actions that really matter in community building? Here’s 4 that are top of mind for me: #1 A commitment to the long game. Ask yourself this seriously: Do you (or your org?) really, authentically want to gather community in this space? And p.s. Your answer doesn’t have to be YES. There is no ‘should-ing’ here! But if your answer isn’t yes to gathering authentic community - choose a different plan to pour into. If you aren’t showing up from a space of authenticity… don’t expect to be met by it either. #2 Community isn’t a lead generator, it’s a trust builder - at scale. Don’t apply other channel metrics for conversion into the space. Community is organic. How can you be ‘of service’ - instead of ‘creating a conversion’. The relationships. The real talk. In those spaces… trust develops over time. Which spoiler… likely will lead to you reaching other goals. But it isn’t a fast path - it’s a groundswell. Can we agree to stop calling it a community if it's really just your sales funnel? Ok, hopping off my soapbox. #3 Make your values and/or vision the entry point. A value-aligned community or vision-aligned community create the magnetic field to gather community. Gathering people who hold the closest beliefs or desire for what’s possible in the world? Yeah, the connection there is going to flow naturally. How can you center those values + celebrate those together? That becomes a magnetic place of connection + shared progress. #4 Are you letting go? Community isn’t controlled... It’s dynamic. It’s a space that grows new believers in your mission that continue to grow + gather people around the same ideals. Are you letting go enough to let that happen? Yeah, that’s when the magic happens. When the community is growing, moving + breathing… regardless of you being there. But of course, you want to be there. So what did this stir up for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts + other ideas of what you’ve seen work in community building in the comments. ✌️ // If you’re new here, hey I’m Jon, nice to know ya. You will find me here fanning the flames of the #impactuprising -> a movement of changemakers who gather + grow in the power of community. 👊 Would love to connect.
