We're thrilled to celebrate the City of Longmont, Colorado and the dedicated team at the Longmont Wastewater Treatment Plant (with special recognition to Roberto Luna, Water Quality Laboratory Supervisor) as a 2024 WEF Wastewater Surveillance Champion! Longmont is one of only four #utilities selected for this honor, thanks to their outstanding contributions to the rapidly evolving field of #wastewater surveillance. Nominated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Longmont has been a trailblazer since joining the program in 2020. Roberto, in particular, has become a passionate advocate for wastewater surveillance, building connections with other utilities, #publichealth agencies, and local leaders to further strengthen the program. Longmont’s key contributions include: - Actively engaging in the wastewater surveillance community, with Roberto participating in the NWSS Utilities Community of Practice, presenting at workshops, and serving on the Colorado NWSS CoE Advisory Board. - Building strong partnerships with state and local public health agencies. - Providing invaluable data by consistently submitting samples twice a week for four years, contributing to critical trend analysis throughout the pandemic and beyond. - Leading the way during the transition to a sentinel surveillance model by agreeing to serve as an emergency surveillance site when needed. Roberto and the City of Longmont exemplify the ideal utility partner for the CDPHE program. #WEFPublicHealth #watercommunity #partnerships

We're excited to recognize the Town of Abingdon, Virginia and the staff of the Wolf Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), especially Shannon (Duncan) Turner, BS, MBA, Christopher Pritt, and the Woodard & Curran contract operations crew, as a 2024 WEF Wastewater Surveillance Champion! Abingdon was one of 4 #utilities selected for this recognition for their exemplary contributions to the #wastewater surveillance field. Nominated by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Abingdon's early participation in sentinel monitoring was crucial to the development of the Virginia program. The Wolf Creek WRF has meaningfully contributed to the wastewater surveillance field by: - Demonstrating outstanding consistency—submitting 141 samples over nearly three years without a single missed submission. - Maintaining proactive communication with VDH, lab partners, and the public. - Being responsive to VDH’s requests for supplemental data and other information needed for timely dashboard updates. Their participation generates critical #data for vulnerable populations in Virginia’s Far Southwest region. With Wolf Creek WRF often detecting viral spikes before other plants, their data is essential for safeguarding the health of all Virginians! #WEFPublicHealth #publichealth #watercommunity
