About us
The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) operates under the delegated authority of the Washington Supreme Court to license the state’s nearly 40,000 lawyers and other legal professionals. In furtherance of its obligation to protect and serve the public, the WSBA both regulates lawyers and other legal professionals and serves its members as a professional association — all without public funding. The WSBA’s mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Thank you the Washington State Bar Association for honoring the FIRST Legal Clinic with their Apex Award. Our work is made possible by our heroic parent allies Gina Wassemiller and jennifer justice. Led by our executive director Taila Ayay, We are grateful for our conflict attorneys Crystal Alford, Brittany Ciechi, Brittany Tri, Olga Martin and Justine Olimene. Our community partners at Providence Health & Services and Swedish along with our Harm reduction Doula Collective partners, Evergreen Treatment Services help us forge new networks and partnerships to advance the well-being of families and children. Special thank you to Rob Wyman and Ron Murphy at Casey Family Programs for their continued support of our clinic.
It was a packed house in Everett celebrating 2023 APEX Award honoree FIRST Legal Clinic’s incredible work to prevent the trauma of family separation. Since 2019, thanks to co-founder Adam Ballout, Executive Director Taila Ayay, and the extraordinary staff and parent-allies, FIRST Legal Clinic has helped more than 1,100 families stay together. The FIRST (Family Intervention Response to Stop Trauma) Legal Clinic is a free clinic aimed at pregnant persons and parents of newborn infants who are at risk of Child Protective Services (CPS) removal from their parents’ care. FIRST Clinic’s work has resulted in a reduced need for CPS involvement, to the extent that 80% of their clients do not have a dependency filed when the FIRST Clinic has been involved.
